Whats the difference of a 1931 Chevy two door sedan and a 1931 Chevy two door Coach? I understand there is a difference, anyone know what the different is and does it affect the frame?
Also where could I find a frame for a 1931 Chevy Coach? The old frame is gone around the battery box area. I was told that only a 31 frame would fit a 31, is this true?

As far as I know, on a 2-door coach, the rear wall goes straight down in back, to the apron that covers the gas tank. There was also a style called the 5 passenger sedan. On that one, the rear wall went down to just below the window, then there was a small hump (that bumped out to the rear), then down.
I`m not sure about the similarities of the frames between the 2, but I understand that 1931 WAS a one-off type of year in many respects, and 30 or 32 parts won`t fit.
I`m sure Royer, or Gene may be able to expand on this some more.
The only thing I`m sure of, is that I`m not sure of anything.

First off, Chevrolet had only one frame in 1931.Chevrolet refered to their 2 door cars as a coach.Most makers called them 2 door sedans.Chev. had just one 2 door but it came in a DeLuxe and Standard (plain) model.There was kind of a cross between a coupe and a 2 door called a 5 passenger coupe.These were rare.It had a small built in trunk on the rear.....Yes, the '31 frame is all by itself.

Where are you located? I bought a used frame for my 31. The original frame is a completely rolling restored chassis. If your going original give me a call. I also might know of a stripped frame in Kansas. Thats where I bought mine. Brought it back to Michigan in a shortbed s-10, hanging out the back.

GMBOB: This info is for a friend and she's going to rod the 31, About finished doing a completely stock 29 and she has a 31 Coach in very rough shape so she's going to rod it. A frame is about all she needs other than some sheetmetal parts. She's not using any of the old running gear. We live in Northern Ky just north of Louisville on the Indiana border.

You may want to try the search feature, but I thought there was some discussion a while back about using S-10 frames for early 30`s streetrods.
The only thing I`m sure of, is that I`m not sure of anything.

old_gto: Thanks for your response. I have a sore spot relating to S-10 frames. I got stuck with a S-10 frame deal with a 36 Ford PU. It was so convincing,disc brakes,Indpt Susp., PS, brake lines already in, gas tank mounted, really sounded like it was saving so much time/parts. I had the frame Professional shortened to 112 inches. BTW, the fellow who sold it to me told me the front fit okay. I believed him as you can see.  I understand the S-10 frame can be used on vehicles with inside fender panels that can be altered to go around the steering unit, etc. but S-10 frames are very hard to use on "fender on frame" vehicles. Lots of junk out front that are in the way. The cab is narrower on the older vehicles and without narrowing the S=10 frame you can't channel the body as it won't straddle the stock S-10 frame.
I hope this makes sense. I want folks to check into non model frame switches before getting into a mess like I did. I asked on the boards and didn't get any responses on the 36 to S-10 match, that should've been a red light, didn't take, I blundered on in. .
Back to the 31, We will probably use homemade horns and go from there. This way we won't be ruining a good frame by altering it.

If the frame is gone around the area that the battery box used to sit, I'd suggest that you consider fabricating a repair to replace thais portion only. The frame was relatively straight in this area, and appearance is not overly critical - while strength is.
If you aren't comfortable doing this type of work, you should be able to locate a competent shop without too much trouble. If you don't have any shops that normally do this work, check with firms that regularly mount truck bodies, extend frames and wheelbases on trucks, etc.

Rodney...sorry to hear of the troubles with the S-10 frame! Possibly GMBob has the answer. If that one does`nt work out, you may ask on Rob Cummings site:

It`s dedicated to 30`s Chevy owners. There`s about 70 members, and there`s a section called "Chevy Messages" where you can post questions.
As mentioned above, if the frame is only bad in spots, repair sections may be the best bet.
The only thing I`m sure of, is that I`m not sure of anything.

The word 2 door sedan never really came into being till the 50s. A 2 door 5 passenger was a coach. 4 doors was a sedan. One didn’t need anything else to identify them.
There was a 5 passenger coupe with a trunk,

During the 1933 model-year, the five-passenger coupe was renamed to Town Sedan. The Town Sedan was a two-door.
