The post mortem has begun and I want to express my deepest thanks to the guys who were part of this tremendous event. George led the charge including bringing vital items like the cherry picker. Bob (Hypr) and Paul (Wagoncrazy) came all of the way down from the Santa Clarita Valley and Junior (SWBATT) and Mel (MELFOYE) represented the area to the south of us. The lone stray was my buddy Tony Two Pies who thought that he was coming to George's birthday party...what a guy.
I can not imagine how I would have gotten this done with out the help of these terrific CT members. They made it happen and I will be eternally in their debt. I will post some pictures as soon as I can.
The engine showed a blown head gasket on number 2. Hard to explain as we put new heads on it less than 100 miles ago.
When George pulled the pan, he found about a quart of coolant...Some of the rod bearings had scratches that point to something had passed through there.
The oil pump turned out to be an aftermarket stocker; The timing chain was a factory truck style double non roller; the pistons are forged .060 over TRWs with a small dome; probably 10.00:1 with 118cc heads; Crank was a stocker cast.
The cam turned out to an Edelbrock LS-5 replica with at least one flat lobe;
The insides of the cylinders have a tar-like substance all over them. Best guess is that someone poured sugar into the tank. As you guys with Nomads know, the rear end has to be unbolted and moved to get the tank out, but it has to come out and be cleaned and sealed. I will also have it covered with under coating. Maybe I ought to put the 3.64 posi in at the same time.
I have ordered a new rotating assembly with Probe pistons(10:1) with full floating pins, a steel forged crank and H beam rods with ARP bolts, a Moroso windage tray, Cloyes double roller timing set, and a Mellings oil pump. The cam will be an Isky 270/280 flat tappet.
I had planned to build a 496 and go with a hydraulic roller cam, but my machine shop guy talked me into the standard stroke and flat tappet cam based on the fact that it will probably never see a drag strip nor hit 5500 RPM. He has built a lot of 468s with this head and cam set up, and the dyno shows about 485 horses and over 500 ft/lbs from 3000 up.
That ought to work and should end any problems under the hood. If it doesn't get the job done, about 4 pounds of boost will probably work.

Again, thanks the guys who bailed me out. I simply hope that I can return the favor some day

No Thanks necessary Thadd. I enjoyed seeing all of the guys. You're just getting the payback for all the times you have helped other people.

Yep, that works for me too. It's your good karma coming back around to visit you Thadd.

'bout how long do you think this engine rebuild will take?

You need to be rollin' in the Nomad for a christmas parade somewhere.

Thadd my freind it was in deed my pleasure. The quart of coolant likely is from when we tilted the engine. I saw a bunch of coolant flow into the cam valley from the coolant passages from the heads.
When we checked the dip stick the oil was clean of water and had a burnt odor. If there had been coolant in a running engine it the oil on the dip stick would have been milky.
Can you post some photos of the broken down engine? I am especially interested in the pistons and cylinder walls.

Hyper, You are right about the coolant in the pan.
It was not mixed into the oil.
The cylinders are all OK, the bores are true, round, and straight. The pistons were covered in some sort of sticky goop (like honey), the valves were too, faces, stems and all. The shop owner suspects old, bad gas. One crank journal was scored. Cam bearings were all good, Mains were scuffed but not badly.
The cam had some flat lobes, the timing chain was stretched a bunch. The block is good enough to use.
Thadd and the owner of the shop have speced out a
pile of parts to replace the old ones.

Hmmm, sounds like time for a new rotating assembly. And cam. Personally I would really have that block completely checked out before I would consider reusing it. I am still concerned about what we found in the radiator and upper coolant passages. Oil was obviously getting into the coolant somehow even though water was not getting into the oil. What did he say about that?
Perhaps time to consider stepping up to a 496?

We're all assuming that you've gone overboard and elected to build a 500+ ci engine with a supercharger and all….

Anything happening with the machine shop lately?

I talked to George. He said rotating parts are close to being done, but all the shop truck are down. They are waiting on some parts for Thadd that should be in soon.

Seperate item... They both want to go to the Long Beach Swap Meet December 1st and sell. I got a first birthday to go to at noon that day and probably wont be able to do it. It does sound like a good idea though, just not December for me. I've go to follow up with George on that and will ask about progress again.

How's Paula's Nomad?

I apologize for the lack of contact.
I spent a week in Las Vegas at the SEMA show, working for my new boss, ( and taking pics of booth bunnies ). The place I was staying said they had a WI-FI but it didn't work in my room. The latest news is this; The engine will be ready on or about 11/20.
The Nomad needs a new gas tank, and Thadd wants to change the rear gears. We have the Nomad at a shop where they are dropping the rear axle to R&R the tank (Thadd bought a new one) and changing the rear gear too. The engine will be run in on a test stand at the engine shop and then the shop where the Nomad is will replace the engine. The part about the donuts is true, but my guy is no longer in the wacky tabakky bidness.
Happy Thanksgiving to all of you
