I am having a problem with my wiring. I could only get the low beams to work but the other day when I tried to get the high beams to work the lights quit working both high and low and the radio cut off. I pushed the light switch in and I could turn the radio back on. But if I turned light back on radio would go off.

So before the car burns up or I really cause a big problem I wanted to ask a couple of questions.

I know Clarks has a new wiring harness for $350 and I can get a used one from Corvair Ranch for $150. Would it be better to get the new wire harness and not go with another one that is old as the one I have now? If a new one is the way to go is there a wire company that could make me a harness for less than $350 and work as well?

Any thoughts and help are appreciated.

Ok, here are some thoughts:

You don't have to pay $350 and you don't have to pay $150. What you need to do is TROUBLESHOOT the problem so you can find out where it is and what it is. Once you have that information, you may find that you can fix the problem without replacing the harness at all. Replacing the harness is a lot of work as well as a lot of money, so why do it if you don't have to?

If the problem occurs only when the light switch is turned on, it sounds as if you might have a short in one of the lighting circuits. The first thing you need to do is find out which circuit is causing the problem.

Assuming the you are working on the 64 Corvair in your sig, I need to see if I can find a wiring diagram for it. In the meantime, please answer one question. Does the problem (with the radio) occur only when the headlights are turned on, or does it happen with the switch in the parking light position too?

I do not know if the radio goes off if in parking lights but next week end I will try and I do have a wire diagram. I will see if dimmer switch is bad, or. If the connection between trunk and dash wire are connected good and tight. I never did have both high and low beams working only one.

I found the problem, the dimmer switch was bad. Took it out and by passed it and all lights are working. I bought it from O-Reilly I will Monday see if NAPA has one.

Thanks for the help.
