Hi all.... Im hoping someone out there can help me with how to check why my electric cooling fan wont come on, and my car over heats.. I've jumped the fan directly to the battery and it comes on fine...The temp gauge in the dash doesnt work...Where is the sending unit and the Temp switch...are there checks to test the relays and circuitry... Thanks....

What year is your car? What kind of transmission? Engine?
I live to drive fast and will die doing so....no better way to go out. Only if death can catch me. |

The temperature sender for the fans is in the passenger side cylinder head above the starter.
Since the fans are turned on/off by the ECM, I'd get a hold of an electrical manual with a troubleshooting guide before I start probing around randomly.

Its been awhile since I played with mine but I remember the sensor in the passenger side head, replaced mine with a Jet brand so they would come on at a lower temp. Also check the relay.

The 2.8L V6 cooling fan only comes on a 244 degress. Hook-up a 2-way toggle switch directly to the fan motor That way you can activate the fan any time you want to.

From what I recall on vehicles of that era, the ECM sends a signal to the fan relay when the temperature reaches 226 degrees F. For this system to work, you need an accurate temperature sensor. The temperature sensor is not the same as the sending unit for the gauge.
Also, when the vehicle is running, use a scan tool to see the engine temperature.
People fear change because it threatens what they know, or what they claim to know. |
