I have a 69 with a 250 and powerglide. Will a first generation 283 bolt up to my transmission?

Yes it will, and since ALL 283's had a machined/drilled pad for a starter motor, there will not be a problem there (as say an early 265 would have). You can also use the flexplate AND torque converter from the six, and you will get slightly more stall from the six cylinder application torque converter. I would suggest going through the Powerglide, and update to the 5 pack direct clutch, and delete the wavy steel in that clutch pack also (I would also use a steel direct hub from the after market folks, but I have several 5 pack, stock, cast iron hubs if you'd like one). For street use I would keep the reverse clutch pack wavy steel. Use a shift kit. The six cylinder Powerglide will be a 1.82 low gear unit. Your transmission could also be an air cooled model, and that will be fine unless you get carried away putting power to it. Many years ago, there was a local fella that had a 375 HP, 396 powered Nova SS with a 4 speed. He blew the big block up, and dropped in a 283, 2 barrel carb motor, and with the 396 emblems still on the car, he was pretty much left alone by the street racers that did'nt know about the car. It depends on how early your 283 is. 62-up won't have any problems. 58-61 will require you to swap a 168 tooth flexplate, because the starter drilling on those will not accept a 153 tooth starter. 57 is unusable because of no side mounts.

If you want to run stock (for the Nova) exhaust pipes, you will have to replace the manifolds on any engine that has rams horns.
