When I was a young man and a 21 year-old US Navy submarine sailor, I bought a new car in November of 1964 almost identical to this one. John Smith Chevrolet in Atlanta had it way in the back. The 65 models were already out for a couple of months. I traded my red 57 Bel Air convertible in on the car and got $1,000 for it. I found this one about 2 1/2 years ago about 50 miles from my home with 64K documented miles on it. I knew I had to have it! The only differences in the two were: my first one was a 327, and this one is a 283, my first one didn't have factory AC, and this one does, my first one had an AM radio, and this one has the original factory AM/FM with a dealer installed Delco reverberater. Otherwise, they are identical. This one was built in Arlington and sold new at Plains Chevrolet in Amarillo.

The previous owner had it since 1977 when he brought it from Dallas to Atlanta. He drove it very little and had the PG rebuilt, new springs, shocks, and exhaust installed recently. He also added dual exhaust since the 64 283 came with a single. It rides and sounds great! A dream come true for this soon to be 70 year-old.

Nice I like the color. I wanted to paint my 63 orange, kind of regret not doing it looking at this 61.

My '61 Bel Air as it looked new in 1961. That's my aunt (owner of the car then) and me.

And here is the same car today. I was able to buy the car earlier this year after it had sat un-used in a field for the past six or seven years. It took me a while to get it running again, but it's back in shape now. All that's left is a new paint job and work on the interior. The car is sitting in just about the same spot it was in the 1961 photo (the house is mine now).

It's good to have my aunt's car back and to have it back "home" where it belongs.

And here it is after a coat of paint to help with some of the rust issues until I can save enough money for a full restoration. It's a little at a time, but progress is being made.
