Is there an online VIN search available that will search a VIN back through all owners or am I just dreaming?

I figured that, but thought I would ask anyway.

Let me expand on that.

Each state maintains records but they only go back so far. Law enforcement can access whether a VIN is reported stolen in all 50 states but that information only goes back so far also. States maintain these records primarily for recording liens. Privacy laws/policies will generally prevent you from getting any information even if they have it. If you were able to get a law enforcement officer to run a check for you, he's probably doing that illegally or at least violating a policy. Exception would be if you have a lien against the vehicle and have some kind of documentation. In other words, pursuing a legal question of title.

Yepper I agree with Rick_L the info only goes back so far. The 'phone search' sites..they only go back about 10 years. Too bad, I agree.

Stan

It's all good. mostly

This might not be a bad thing. Do you really want to be contacted by some ya-hoo you sold a 72 Chevy Luv to that was full of bondo, rust, an aging small block and now 4 owners later someone wants to know how you wired up the starter to work like that?

There is enough information in the public domain. Let's leave the previous owners of automobiles alone....

57 Nomad -LS1 with C4 suspension
59 Apache Fleetside Shortbed BigWindow
