I am looking at buying a 70 SS but want to make sure it is a real SS. I have a copy of the build sheet and it doesn't list an SS option but list an Group Option that cost $445.55. The car was built in Arlington Texas.

Thanks
Bruce

"Z15"? Must be a factory big block the be an "SS". The VIN stamping on the block head deck under the alternator (smaller font string) must match the VIN tag under the windshield. Only a portion of the number string with match, not the entire string. Also, build sheet should have the VIN in the upper right. Post a picture of your build sheet?

I just realized what I have isn't the build sheet but a window sticker. Also the engine number has been machined off when the deck was machined. I'm not sure how to post photos but I will give it ago.
Thanks Bruce

The window sticker would probably indicate an SS as well. I know it's true of Monte Carlo, so it should be true for Chevelle as well that the front lower control arm bushings would be oval if it were an original big block car. My small block Monte has round bushings.

I have absolutely no idea how to post a photo so if someone could give me some hints it would be greatly appreciated. I am using an iPad at the moment as I am away from my main computer for the next few weeks.
Thanks
Bruce

If your window sticker is a real original sticker to the car and the car is a real SS the sticker would show either the Z25 SS 396 or the Z15 SS 454 option typed upon it. If either the SS396 or SS454 option is not there then the car is not a SS.

This '70 SS 396 ad shows a good photo of the window sticker...scroll down thru the photos to find the window sticker and see how the RPO code Z25 SS 396 option ("Z25 SS 396 Equipment") was printed on the sticker:
