Since completion of my '55 Nomad, I have had re-ocurring issue of exhaust fumes in the cabin. Entire exhaust system has been checked, no leaks. Have re-positioned twin pipes to exit diagonally at corner of rear bumper, instead of straight back near bumperettes. Have installed additional weather stripping on tailgate. Still getting fumes in cabin. Anyone have any ideas/experience with this issue? Thanks!

has your liftgate been straightened? if it hasnt and needs straightening it might not be sealing properly. this is just my guess. the rear lifgate and tailgate never seal properly, and a liftgate that still has a twist definitely doesnt help. if you need more info on this, email me directly at michaelbakotich@ca.rr.com any pictures of your liftgate would help me assess it.

I just got mine on the road and have driven about 400 miles. My tail pipes exit at the very rear corners of the bumper and point downward and outward a little.. I do have the tail pan seal and my lift gate was straightened by madmooks. So far no gases inside the car. Not sure what attribitued to my my clean air inside, maybe all above helped.

I had my liftgate straightened by Jerry C. In California. Crated it up and shipped it out. I have had one person mention that the liftgate still looked a bit "tweaked" when I was at the CNA convention last year, so maybe it still needs work, as Jerry could not see it reinstalled on the car. I did not install a seal at the rear bumper either and no exhaust smell. My exhaust exits just before the bumper, good day.

The lower pan seal is a dust seal to prevent dirt from blowing up on the back of the car and back window, I don't think it would do much for exhaust fumes.
I would guess it's getting in either through the back gate or window or possibly from under the car. Any open holes in the spare tire well ?
Check for leaks at the mufflers and joint welds.

Thanks for the suggestions, have checked all of that-just had a new exhausr syestem put on from the headers back-tight as can be. No holes in the floors or spare tire compartment.It is coming from somewhere and by process of elimination by gosh we will pinpoint it. Thank you!

Thanks Nomad Jack! My twin pipes used to exit right where your's do, but stuck out about an inch or so past the bumper. In the middle of my trip I was so frustrated with fumes (after completely taping off the tailgate and liftgate!) I pulled into a custom exhaust shop and ended up having everything re-done from the headers back, and re-positioned the exhaust tips to exit diagonally at the very corner of each bumper, thinking that would shoot the fumes out back and to the side. Still getting fumes! I do need to double check for leaks where the headers connect to the manifold. Thanks for your input and glad you have a "clean ride"!

It's exhausting....
Go to a good exhaust shop and have them pressurize your exhaust with a smoke machine. You'll find the exhaust leak immediately.
If tht's not the problem you could be piping exhaust into the quarter panel cavity. There are few openings there, but enough to be worth checking into.
Lastly, why is your exhaust so evil? What about a tune up? I was able to survive my leaking liftgate and lost exhaust extension for several hundred miles. I could smell it and knew i would have to fix it, but it would not have made me stop at an exhaust shop.
OK. Not quite lastly... Check your headers for leaks between the primaries near the collectors.

Thanks for your suggestions cdmHenry! Especially preasurizing the system with smoke-as for the tune-up,it is carbureated, and I do think it is running a bit rich judging from the blackened tail pies-good point. I will follow up on each of your sugestions-thanks!

I was getting the Nomad out of winter storage, cleaning her up and getting my inspection sticker last Friday. In detailing the engine I had unplugged some sensors and the injectors so I could better clean and polish. When done, went for a ride and got the inspection sticker, then I went and picked up the wife and we headed out for lunch, and she commented that it smelled and she was correct. When I went to start up the Nomad, it started real rough and the idle speed was faster then normal. I was thinking it the gas went bad sitting over the winter, and by the time we got home, it really did have a strong smell. Ended up being the H2O sensor wasn’t connected so the computer didn’t now how hot the engine was and I guess was richening up the mixture. As soon as it was reconnected, the idle speed dropped and the smell went away. The point of this long tail, the suggestion to check the engine tune is a good one.

Old trick. Run the heater blower and draw outside air source (Windows up). This pressurizes the cabin. If the source is from outside the smell will go away.

I ran the rear tips out to the edge of the quarter panel, with an angle cut parallel to the sheet metal. Even with the liftgate open, we never had any exhaust smell or fumes in the cabin.

There are other ways for fumes get inside. If I remember correctly, there should be a rubber seal around the tail gate cables just rearward of the extractor. And also you may have small leaks in the seal around the rear inner fender to the outer fender. These are hard to replace but if they are not all broken up you may be able to use a spray sealer from the inside of the quarter panel area that is next to the rear seat. Hope this helps.
