Yeah, very annoying. There is a bulletin on this. Pull the edge of the headliner back approximately 1.00" on the edge and if the color is black it's part of the recall, light grey was the replacement.

Subject: Snap, Pop or Rattle Noise From Lift Off Roof Panel While Driving (Replace Front Lift Off Roof Panel Handles and Lube)

Models: 2005-2009 Chevrolet Corvette

with Removable Clear Roof Panel (RPO CC3), Removable Sun Roof Panel (RPO CF7) or Dual Removable Roof Panels (RPO C2L)

Condition
Some customers may comment on a snap, pop or rattle noise coming from the lift off roof panel while driving.

Cause
This condition may be caused by the nylon roller inside the left and/or right front roof panel latching handle becoming loose and causing the roller to move on the pin, creating the noise.

Correction
Replace the left and right front lift off roof panel handles (1) and lube. Refer to Roof Lift Off Panel Front Latch Handle Replacement in SI. The updated handles have a new design ramp insert in place of the nylon roller.

Technicians are to apply GM Super LubeŽ with PTFE, P/N 12371287 (in Canada, P/N 10953437) to both sides (left and right) at the following areas:

Apply GM Super LubeŽ around the entire guide pin ball (1) on the roof panel.

Apply GM Super LubeŽ inside the "pocket" of the stainless steel track (1).

Lubing it helps temporarily . Since I can't trust the dealer with my car, I've just lived with it as the music drowns it or the roof is out.

Many reasons for roof noise. Rollers as said, but also j hook, weatherstrip itch, and the door glass hitting/rubbing the screws that mount the side seal.

I just fixed one today that turned out to be the glass rub.

Unfortunately, I have a loyal band of owners who trust me. To be honest, I wish they did'nt. More than half of them are a total PITA, cheap, and have a hard time even saying thank you. They act like their 06 is still under bumper to bumper warranty and i should feel obligated to fix whatever right away. Not all, but unfortunately most.

Thought you might like to hear the other side of the story. Maybe the tech/dealership you can't trust is just sick of vette owners and don't want them around. I could argue they are the smart ones, but I still have a glimmer of hope for humanity.

But it's hard when an owner blames the mechanic for a scratch that the owner had the body shop try to buff out at the end of last season, or the rip in the leather was'nt there when they droped it off, but it's really not a rip, it's a rub through, and the owner has a huge phone on his belt in the same spot as he puts on his act. I could go on for days.

Most of the owners like this have "local Corvette club" plate frames.

My favorite Corvette owner is an old guy with a 50th Z06 in silver. He hits stuff often, I've probably painted the entire car by now, his rims are chewed from hitting curbs, but he keeps it somewhat clean, and gets it fixed as needed. He DRIVES it. He's not saving it for anyone, thinks about re-sale value, or what anyone thinks.

what could be the problem with the j-hook? mine latches fairly soft. what is weather strip itch? when it rains the popping goes away fo the most part.

Sorry Bob, I lost this thread. Itch is pretty much as you would imagine it. It is somewhat dull when you transiting a rise in pavement, garage opening. You know. It can be easily resolved by using a high quality silicone spray. Keep the rubber clean and slick, and it won't be an issue.

Kenny, I didn't mean to impune you or bobb or any of the techs on the forum. My issue with the dealership is with the service writer and the business operation in general.

I recently purchased an '09 Z51 1LT Coupe in Cyber Gray. The creaking and moaning was very noticeable in the parking lot of the dealership but non existent on the highway. The car already had the upgraded handles installed previously.

I drove it home and read some of the internet suggestions about DIY repair to reduce or eliminate the problem...O-rings on the alignment pins, GM grease or dielectric grease on the pins and seals or a C-clip on the roller pin. DIY owners report varying degrees of success.

The car is a Certified Pre Owned with 6,600 miles. That extended the oem factory warranty for an additional year. The dealer tried the GM procedure with negative results.

In the end, they ordered a brand new roof which seems to have fixed about 95% of the noise.

Now I remember why I left...

I read the sticky and did the items in order, grease, 3/32 C clip, then I tried the shrink tubing shrunk around the male posts and trimmed off the excess and I've not heard a creak since then. I have my top on and off a lot and still no noise.

Good luck!

Hi,

Our C6 2008 Corvette roof pops too and we use GM silicone which is clear is a tube. It runs around $12.00 a tube. We took it in the the Chevy dealer back in 2008 and the mechanic there used this product. It worked like a charm. Take the roof off and put a small amount on your finger and place it on the rubber seal, then put the roof back on. We have to do this every season. We live in Western Montana and store the Corvette for the winter. Hope this helps.
