Is it safe to let the engine hit the (what I assume is) the rev limiter? I went over 6500 rpm and the engine seemed to die just as I let off the gas.

Did I mess it up?

The rev limiter is there for a reason and it is not good to repeatedly bounce off of it. If it was accidental and an isolated case, you won't have a problem. Most stock lzx engines hit the HP peak around 6300 and it falls off(not a lot) after that. The 6600 limiter is set with that in mind. There is no point in stretching beyond that except in certain road racing and drag racing conditions. Even then, you are sacrificing engine life. I think it is smart to shift at the right time and save your engine.

it just shuts of the fuel but it will not help if you down shift at too high a RPM the engine will still over speed
