Hi all, I have a chance to get a 12 bolt housing from a guy. He says it measures 55 3/8" from backing plate to backing plate. Is this the correct width for a 68-72 rear? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Nick

Here's a list of stock rearend widths measured WMS (wheel mounting surface) to WMS.
Sorry, but I don't have anything listing dimensions from backing plate to backing plate.

Depending on how you measure it...'65-'67 chevelle is 54 1/2" and '68-'72 chevelle is 55 1/2" between backing plates.Add about 2 1/4" per side approx for brakes and drums and you get the overall measure.

Doesn't the sell know what it is? What it is out of, what ratio, std or posi? Let alone condition?
How about the casting date, casting number on center section?
Certainly not going to buy a rear end based on a measurement.
