Do i need to take the whole front end and fenders off of my 39 to remove the engine, or can it be done all together or partially together?

I had a look at the online at the '38 online manula and it does not mention. This is what the '41 manual says

Worked a little on 39 Chevys and it's tough getting in there, I know you will have to take the hood and hood hinge bracket off which will need to come off even if your going to be removing the nose, as for taking the whole nose off you might be in better shape doing it that way

Hood and core support removal would be necessary....if it were mine I would just lift off the entire front clip as a unit. That would require the removal of the least (rusted) bolts.

On my `38 I removed the front dog house (holds the grille/radiator. I removed the hood and basically let the front fender droop outward. It was much easier this way. Pull the trans with the engine as a unit. You can basically slide everything in straight and it goes pretty fast.

Can someone please tell me how to access the rear hood attaching point at the cowl on a 38 sedan? I need to remove the hood and can't find a way to get to the fastener holding the center hood rod in place at the rear. I'm hoping I don't have to come at it from underneath the dash. Much clutter under there.

I would leave the rear hood attaching plate in place and loosen the nuts on the rods that support the radiator under the dash. Then you can pull the front sheet metal forward, to pull the hood center rod out of the holdown.
