I got the new carb plumbed in and bolted on. I installed a relay for the fuel pump, re-routed the fuel line down the C-channel and cleaned up some wiring. I had just enough timne last night to test all the electrical connections and fire it up. She's pumping fuel just fine and she started right up!

I still need to re-tune the carb for the motor, set idle mix, adjust the idle speed, cold start idle, TV cable that sort of thing, then she'll be ready for a test drive!

Mikey, Jeff - yes, I took about a bajillion pictures, no I haven't processed them yet. I plan to have them up tonight.

Here's the old Thermoquad on the bench for good.

Here's the cavity I have to work in. Not so good for a man of girth such as m'self.

Solution: I used Mikey's engine as a model to fab up & fit the plumbing & linkage brackets. Here's the new fuel inlet (the T.Q. came in the back of the carb). I needed to run behind the alternator and drop out into the C-channel on the forward RH frame.

Here I routed the vacuum line for the brake booster under the linkage. The T.Q. had no outlet for this and I used a "T" fitting out of the manifold. The hose used to droop over the throttle linkage (not good).

Here's where it paid off - the new fuel inlet line just dropped right in place and dumps out right where I wanted it to.

Here's the vac line in the back - looks like it's suposed to be there.

There all in and hooked up. Now all I have to do is tune it. - Oh yeah and clean up about 25 lbs of sloppy half azzed wiring.

Where do you have the electric choke wire going, I read that it should be on the starter "run" terminal?

Well I was on my way to work on the 66 when the Ranger started to make that noise again. There is a noise it has been making when taking a left turn on the freeway but not all the time. Well this time it really started. It sounded like a wheel bearing. It managed to stop binding and I drove it home about 15 miles.
It seems the last dork that did the brake job forgot to put the seal on the left side. I drove this truck 35,000 miles like this. After I got the wheel off I noticed I needed new brakes.
I should have known something was amiss. When I first got the truck it was making a banging sound when ever I went over a bump. I noticed it stopped when I applied the brakes. Well after looking around the same dork that forgot the seal didn't tighten the caliper mount bolts very well. They were making their way out.
Lucky for me I was able to get the remainder of the bearing off.
So I had to work on that truck instead today. I put new rotors, brakes and wheel bearings only on the left side but I did repack all of the bearings. I spent about $150 in parts.

I think I am going up Sunday to work on the 66. I want to get it started this weekend.

I ran the e-choke from switched power off of the ign sw.

I don't know if it would be the best idea to have the choke heater on the same circuit as the coil. I'll need to look into that.

I did however, install a fuel pump relay so I could take that load off of the ign. sw. Fuel pump now gets it's power directly from the battery via the positive terminal block at the horn relay.

I'm thinking I'm going to install a bussed terminal strip there so I can have more connections. Right now, with 3 or 4 wires landed at aech of the two screws, the horn relay looks like some kind of Christmas tree ornament.

We got the cab off the frame, set up on blocks. We got the center section of the frame done with POR 15, next we`ll put some glossy black "Rustoleum" over the frame, (it will retain the shine a little better than the POR) then we can start working on cleaning & painting the front suspension parts!

The only thing I`m sure of, is that I`m not sure of anything.

Final adjustments and test drive on Sat. Scarry power!!! gonna have to buy some tires if I keep this up!

I drove it in to work today - 80mph down the freeway. Nice solid ride, responsive and quick. It doesn't feel like a 3/4 ton truck anymore.

Unfortunately on the way home it started acting up again. Like it's running out of fuel. It ran fine on the way to work. It was hot yesterday afternoon (well 88ยบ anyway), maybe that had something to do with it.

It ran strong for almost 10 miles then on the last 5 mile stretch I limped all the way home.

It would cut out like the fuel was being switched off and then lurch forward as if the fuel was being turned on again - then it would die all together. I'd pull over and let it sit for a minute then I'd put it in park, restart the engine and it would rev up just fine. I would put it in gear, it would run good for a minute while shifting through the gears then it would start cutting out again before we could reach 40 mph.

I don't get it! It was running beautifully from Saturday morning until yesterday afternoon.

As you probably already know:

Vapor lock or water contamination in the fuel, usually.

Insulate the fuel line next to the block and up to the carb. Change filters to be safe.

If ti still does it, a vane fuel pump with a return style regulator will eliminate vapor lock, keeping the fuel in the line cool because of the return. It will also eliminate dry carb start ups, if that is an issue.

You can pull the sending unit and look for evidence of water in the tank. It may be necessary to drain the tank and clean it out.

I taped up, prepped and spray painted the outside frame around the vent window glass on the driver side... and painted the exterior side of the vent window assembly as well.

Tomorrow, the fun part... putting it back together.

aggh.
