I don't know if this is the right place but could someone help with identifying a 700r4? , on the driver side it has the #'s 8663548 embossed on it. Is there any other #'s I should look for?.

I don't have that number listed but in 1987 the numbers started with 8663589 so yours is most likely older than that. Probably a 1986 model. As for what it came out of you can get close by looking at the case, tail shaft housing and speedo gear. If it has a tranny mount on the tail shaft housing it is probably from a Camaro or Firebird. If it has a K on the top of the case at the bellhousing it is from a 4x4. If the parts of the case where the flywheel cover mounts are cut off flush with the sides of the bellhousing and do not stick out past there then it is from an S10. ALso what type of speedo connection it has can tell you a bit but I am not up on those.
By looking at the pan you can tell if it is a 86 or older or 87 or newer. The 87 has an auxilliary valve body and requires a pan that is .040" deeper. This pan also has a four indentations near the back of the pan that are the four corners of a square. One of those corners is smaller than the others. If the pan does not have those marks then it is a 86 or older. Also if it has a 27 spline input shaft then it is a 84 or older. A 30 spline input makes it 85 or later. Hope this helps.

When standing behind the transmission and looking at the rear right hand corner of the pan flange there should be an ID code number.

This tranny was rebuilt before I got it and I plan on putting it in my 73 caprice .
This has been a big help ,Thanks all .

It does have the 4 corners of a square with one being smaller , so that means its newer than an 86 and would have a 27 spline shaft ?.

Nope, a 84 and later has a 30 input spline. A 6" tailshaft is a good indicator it came from a car.

The K indicates that it came from a 4x4 but the 4x4 has a 3" tail shaft without a tail shaft housing. If it has had the tail shaft changed and now has a tail shaft housing then it should be about 8" long. Then it should fit in your caprice. The 30 spline input started in 85. The deeper pan started in 87.
After you find the model number as Mike pointed out then one of us can tell you exactly what type of vehicle it originally came out of.

The 350 in my caprice has a 9" tail shaft , I measured both tranny's and there is less than an 1" difference so I Should not have to cut down drive shaft . I didn't notice the numbers when I looked at it before , but I will look more closely and let you know .

It was from a 1987 pickup 4x4 with a 5.7L engine. So that means that it won't fit in your caprice unless it has had the tail shaft changed to a 2wd type and a tail shaft housing added. For a two wheel drive the tail shft housing should be 7 1/4 inches with the shaft extending another 3/4 inch for a total of 8 inches. For a 4x4 the shaft will stick out of the case about 3 inches. These can be changed by a competant mechanic or a good shade tree mechanic with patience.

I just reread one of your previous posts and saw that you already measured it. So someone has already changed out the tail shaft. Cool.
To put the 700r4 in where the th350 came out will require that you verify that the detent cable is set up correctly. In a th350 it is a kickdown cable and in the 700r4 it is a throttle vavle cable. They have different purposes so they have different setup requiements. I recomend that you study the info on this website> http://purplesagetradingp ost.com/sumner/techinfo/7...

I have same trans in my 68 Impala and for life of me cant find a correct inspection cover to fit. Bought 5 factory and 3 different aftermarket and none line up correctly. Starting to get annoyed.
OTLM025 are side numbers last letter illegible. Also has a large MD8. Embossed above those numbers.

K case 700r4 will need the aluminum 4x4 cover with the holes for the support rods.
