Great photos.
I have a Nascar book with allot of photos of the Lagunas. I remember these cars racing. They were perhaps the most dominant cars in Nascar history.
So much so, that there was a restrictor plate mandated for the carburetors to slow them down. Many teams then switched to the 77 Olds 442 which also had an aerodynamic nose.
Also, this is at the tail end of NASCAR cars being real factory bodies and chassis unlike today's fabricated cars. A bygone era.

Love the pics. The Monte Carlo is the winningest body in NASCAR, at least it used to be, and since they haven't used any Malibu bodies since the late 70s, I'd say it probably still is. But that is mostly because it was used from it's inception in 1970 all the way until just a couple of years ago with a brief interruption in using the Lumina. I still love the Laguna as it was on the street or used in racing.

But you're talking about the fabricated body cars of recent NASCAR and the Monte Carlo through time. I was referring to one car of one era when they were real factory bodies and chassis.
When the downsizing of the GM cars came they all had aerodynamic front noses as did Ford and Dodge. That evened the field a little.
The Chevelle and especially the Laguna dominated Nascar from 73-78. It was then the 77 Olds 442 without the mandated carb restrictor plate and the new body cars from all 3 manufacturers.
There is nothing 'stock' car about 'NASCAR' anymore and the appeal has been lost in my opinion.

Richard Petty won the 1979 Nascar championship using a 4 year old Monte Carlo. It was the final championship for him.
The famous Daytona race in 1979 was won by Richard in a Cutlass. The Cutlass was used primarily for high speed tracks because of its aero.
The bulk of his races were in a Monte.

Some drivers used the 116" wheelbase Monte on the slower short tracks and the 112" wb Chevelle, Laguna, Cutlass on the faster big tracks.

love that one - no subtlety in modern racing schemes anymore
My sister moved into her house in London, ON about 20 years ago.
This poster from nearby Delaware speedway, advertising a CASCAR race in the late 70's, was hanging in the garage. couple of Lagunas, not sure why they are behind the Camaros...
I had it laminated recently. Going to put it in my new garage once I get it all set up. :
