Saw this linked on another forum and felt it was pretty important. Most of us do consider that there are risks and dangers associated with the chemicals we use in the shop, but most of us have probably seriously underestimated just HOW dangerous some can be - like this guy did:

<LOL> Too late. Already passed it on to my Corporate safety guy who's included it in the weekly safety news. I'm guessing about 14,000 people will have been exposed to it by next Friday.

I have switched to Non-Chlorinated brake-clean a while back. Actually the non-chlorinated seems to clean a broader range of deposits than the chlorainated type.

My guess is like most guys, you ding yourself, and the LAST thing you want to do is go see the doc. I think there was a thread about this in Tip's Corner a while back about the many different reasons WHY you would not go or wait a long time to go.
Something to consider is it also seems like his decision-making capability was pretty heavily impaired. Though at first when he still had the snap to be researching on the web what happened to him, that should have been enough warning to go straight to the ER.
Someone on another forum that seemed to have a chemistry background suggested the argon had zip to do with it - argon being inert. It was simply the high temperature + brake cleaner was all it took.

Richard, when I was a fire fighter many years ago we learned quickly about Phosgene. Freon generates phosgene when burned and we all made sure we had plenty of ventilation before performing overhaul if the AC or regrigerator systems were ruptered. IIRC, once phosgene enters the lungs, it turns in to hydroflouric or hydrocloric acid, permanently burning the lining of your lungs. Nasty.

Mike, that's a funny coincidence as I was just discussing that very subject with a long-time A/C man the other day. He said it didn't take much to cause you some serious harm.
These are things we don't think much about as we work in our shops on a regular basis around things that could easily hurt us badly or even kill us if we were to slip just a little bit or make a seemingly innocuous bad decision.
Some members on another forum ridiculed the guy for being stupid, but many of us have done similar stupid things and just got lucky. I applaud that he had the stones to stand up and admit he did something stupid that almost killed him, and write up an article to try to keep it from happening to others.

Totally agree with you there, we had a fire in our ships A/C (R22) unit, luckily we had indirect cooling through weathermakers onboard otherwise we would of had phosgene gas go throughout the ships ducting.

You'll get a similar result with brake cleaner in the same room as a torpedo heater. Not even near it, just some of the vapors made it to the heater on the other side of the room. Didn't send us to the hospital but made eyes and lungs burn enough to scatter us out of there.

Who cares that he waited 9 days, he is just like most of us,"It will go away by itself" attitude. We all do it, hell I did it for 6 months with lung cancer and so have several other people I know.

Thank you so much for posting that. You may have saved someone's health or even their life.
Apparently chlorinated cleaners can do that, as well as R12 refrigerant.
