I have a 3spd w/od trans in my '59 Belair. I want to go to a 4spd. It looks like the driveshaft length with the 3spd w/od will work with the 4spd, correct?
Which 4spd transmissions will bolt in easily? (years & models)
Thanx, johnny

Hi Flat,

Looks at the top of the forum list.
There is a sticky addressing driveshaft lengths by transmission types.

Here's a transmission list Chuck sent, if you want to add it to that sticky post Ollie.

Wow! Hey Bowtieollie; the info from Chuck/Jens should be put at the top of the forum as a permanent link. This should be a great complement to the driveshaft length thread. Thanks guys for posting.

Jerry

3 speed with O/D and 4 speed driveshafts are the same, yes. The front section is the one that is different than the other models. The T-10 or Muncie either one should fit. The output yoke may be different, be careful.

Well...On to the next question at hand:
I´m looking to upgrade from a Powerglide to a TH700R4 in a ´58 Impala. The dimension chart is nice, but I see no reference to the PG there.
So, I take it I´d be best off going with the type of 700R4 -unit that´d have the face-to-mount distance of 22 1/4 -inch, but what is the overall length as well as face-to-mount distance of the PG?
This in hopes of figuring out exactly where the trans crossmember needs to be located, as well as the driveshaft shortened?
Thanks again.

Hobbies and interests: A ´58 Impala Sport Coupe, and it seems that´s about it lately...

Anyone know the dimensions of an m40 turbomatic? it's in a 77 van with a strong 400ci. engine that I can pick up cheap.

Never mind, I just found the answer
  • Quote:
The M40 3-speed, automatic transmission, RPO was also a generic category in 1969. It was translated at the factory into the TH350 (actually RPO M38) for non-big-block engines, and into the TH400 for big-block engines.

So I guess the question I need to find an answer to is, does this one have a short shaft?

Here is another tranny spec sheet that shows some other transmissions.

Power Glides are 20 9/16" to mount and 27 9/16 total. Very close to a TH350 short shaft.
