I have a 75 454 Monte & am installing a restified AM-FM stereo radio. Old factory radios used 10 ohm speakers, but my new one requires 4 ohm speakers. I have already removed the old radio and replaced the rear speakers, but am running into a bit of trouble replacing the front speakers. I am trying to remove the dash pad and have removed all the screws that I could see, but it still won't budge, so there must be more hidden screws. Does anyone know where all the hidden screws are and how to remove the dash pad? Do I have to remove the gauge cluster and/or the glove box? Thanks.

there are screws up near the defrost vents, right under your windshield, and you have to pull the gauge cluster.

I don't know exactly where they are on your dash, but typically you remove the cluster, unbolt the steering column and drop or remove it, then you have the screws at the defroster vents that were mentioned, and then it should be a couple of bolts on the lower corners near the kick panels and a brace in the center under the dash. This is of course after removing or disconnecting the radio, heater controls, headlight switch, etc.

I have removed the attaching screws from the gauge cluster, the 4 screws at the defroster ducts near the windshield and the screws on the sides, but since the dash pad is a seperate piece and is just a cover and sits on top of the I/P, why would I have to drop the steering column and remove the heater controls & light switch & I/P? Doesn't make sense to me. Thanks.

You can't take out just the pad. The whole dash has to come out.

Wow. I never realized there was that much just to taking out the dash pad. Have had some Monte's over the years with that infamous crack in the middle of the pad....just could never find a non cracked replacement and had to live with that darn vertical crack.
The whole dash has to come out ? Did the engineers at Chevy not realize we would have to replace those damn cracked pads eventually ? LOL. You would think they would have made it easier on us owner/restorers.
Are the 1st generation (70-72) also that difficult to replace the dash pad ?

G1 MC's are very simple. There are about 5-7 screws and they are out. Same as a Chevelle. My dad has a 70 Chevelle, so that's how I know.

It has been a long time since I owned a 3rd gen Malibu (same dash). Mine had a one piece dash in it. If yours is two piece, you may be able to remove just the pad (top half). Look at the pics in your other post. Like Kyle said, the first gens are easy and it seems thay didn't crack as often or as soon. I've seen several good first gen dash pads in junk yard cars.

FIRST OFF CONTRARY TO EVERYONES BELIEF YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REMOVE THE WHOLE DASH TO REMOVE THE PAD and with that being said. My dash in my 76 laguna came from a 75 monte carlo and the pad itself came from a 74 Chevelle it does and will come apart.
#1. first and foremost DIS-CONNECT THE BATTERY......i didnt have to worry about that part my motor is out LOL
#2.there a total of 13 screws to remove the gauge bezels(you also must very carefully remove the clock setting knob)it comes off separate from the cluster ...........................................
#3. there a total 4 screws and two nuts holding the cluster in (the two nuts are 9 or 10mm nuts)and to remove the speedo cable from behind the cluster is a spring loaded clip push up or down (DON'T PUSH TO HARD IT WILL SNAP) then remove gently for you don't rip the circuit the connection for the electrical workings of the cluster ..................................................
#4.pull gently with a little strength it will just slide out after that..................(HOPEFULLY YOU ARE BAGGING AND TAGGING AT THIS POINT IF NOT DO IT FOR MOST OF SCREWS ARE DIFFERENT SIZES AND HAVE TO GO BACK IN PROPER SPOT OR YOU WILL FRY YOUR DASH PAD( YES I SAID PAD, FOR THE ONES I SEEN ALL ARE TWO PIECES UP TO A 76 I SEEN HAVE TWO PIECES)
#5. there are 2 bolts on each side one going up one going out.......remove both(that releases the frame the holds the pad and dash together) then once you get both sides out pull forward gently you will a phillip's head screw (that must come all the way out and removed, keep all these in a separate bag from rest they are different once again) then remove the glove box door (4 screws) remove ashtray (2 screw's) AND REMEMBER THE 4 SCREWS 2 ON A SIDE FOR THE DEFROSTER VENTS BY WINDSHIELD (AGAIN LENGTH CRUCIAL) .
#6 there about 12 to 14 ----- 1/4" head screws that go up into bottom of dash pad (Keep separate also these are length crucial)
#7 take the 4 bolt's out that hold the steering column in(let the steering column hang there)
#8 there are 4 more bolts that hold the dash to the steering column frame (THESE MUST COME OUT ALSO,again keep separate)
#9 the heater controls are next very carefully (PULL AND LABEL THE SPAGETTI FOR THE HEAT/AIR CONTROLS YOU MUST DO THIS FOR YOU DON'T FORGET ITS A HEADACHE TO FIX CORRECTLY)
#10 You can start inch your dash pad forward it will separate from the dash assy, there a few odd and end screws you will discover for the vents you will have to remove as you pull the dash pad forward, take your time on these THEY ARE VERY BRITTLE !!!! don't forget to disconnect the tubes for the air/vents
#11 when all the screws and such are removed there are two little clips slide in type one on each side of dash pad they are almost to the edge of dash pad (about one inch over from side of vehicle)
and these were taken from the chevelle side of life (FOR REFERENCE ONLY)NOT TO STEAL HIS THUNDER
Get to these after the glove box is removed, the two at the upper right can only be accessed by removing the HVAC controls
These are accessed after gauge cluster removal.

These are from the outside, the one closest to the point may need the kick panel loosened from the door jam
Defrost vents
Lower dash right side
Lower dash left side
This is directly above the glove box and must be removed along with it's bracket in order to remove the upper dash

the red tape marks on the dash (dash pad only) you remove them and the dash should / will come out

You may have to remove most of the front facia to get in under the dash anyway.
People fear change because it threatens what they know, or what they claim to know. |
