UPDATE:
Ran into a few problems, was doing a mock up of all available parts for the motor, blower, tranny (still missing a few parts) so I could set up the motor mounts, tranny cross member, and the radiator location.
Discovered that my crank was not drilled for a pilot bushing. Luckily I had another motor stored away that has an idential crank, and it is drilled for a pilot bushing. It's just that this motor decided not to release the crank easily to me!

It was a battle, but I finally prevailed!
Oh what fun!
Aloha,
Willy

I got the motor between the frame rails today, had to pull off the blower, just couldn't get it high enough (or maybe I wasn't high enough??? ) to get over the frame rails unless I did that.
Here's one pix. Took measurements while celebrating the milestone with some really good Mexican beer....

I hope this isn't getting too detailed, but it seems some of the CT'ers like seeing how all this kind of work is created and put together, so I will keep posting as I put this project together.
Working on Sunday with the motor hanging between the frame rails, as the pic above shows, I measured and sketched out a cross member to be welded in under the pan, where I will mount the front motor mounts, but I wanted the center section of the cross member to be bolted in, so I could drop it out easily to pull the oil pan. The motor mounts will be on the two side pieces, which will be welded solidly to the frame rails. This is what I ended up with, took about four hours yesterday to lay it out, chop the steel, and weld it up. Painted it last night, will weld it in today and set up the motor mounts on it.
Aloha,
Willy

Making some headway, got the new front cross member welded in place under the motor, the "drop out" center section works nice, it will be easy to drop the pan if I have to while the motor is in the car.

Yesterday I welded up a cross member from 1-1/2" black pipe for the tranny tailshaft support, and wanted to make that height adjustable, so then I fabbed two 1/4" plates with three pairs of threaded holes on each side that match the plates welded onto the ends of the tranny support. Then I spent a couple of hours under the car, welded the 1/4" plates onto the frame rails on each side to match the tranny support, then drilled each hole through the frame rail walls, and ran the tap through on each hole, so I now have threaded holes at three different levels that I can adjust the tranny support up or down with. I bolted everything up, tried each level, 3/4" adjustment each, and it all worked great! It's set in the middle position now and seems to be aimed directly at the differential.
If I need to "fine tune" that, I can put a small spacer under the tranny support. Will try to get a couple of pix.
Also laid out my front motor supports on cardboard, now that the tranny tailshaft is centered and supported, I have the front of the motor centered and aligned and can weld the motor mounts in place. Will be fabbing the front motor mounts today and welding them in place.
Aloha,
Willy

Another update, got the motor mounts fabbed and welded in, and the motor and tranny installed. It all has to come out again, still need to do the final assembly on the motor.
Getting there,

Jeff, I took some photos of the project along with me. Talked to several other tri-five gasser owners there, shared some good ideas. CFAC was a really fun event this year, as always. There were some awsum owner built cars there!
Picked up a radiator and fan setup while I was there, now setting up the install.
Posted some pix here.
The fans are pretty close to the blower belt, but there is adequate running clearance. Might lose a fan or two if I lose a belt at high rpm! The whole setup is a tight fit, anybody see any problems with this setup that I don't see?
Aloha,
Willy

Made up some pockets to set the radiator 1.5" lower into the frame rails, where it will now clear the underside of the hood. Still need to reinforce the frame a bit more at those pockets. Will start installing the front bars of the 12 pt cage, and hang the radiator supports off of that.
Aloha,
Willy

Whacked a hole in the hood and it clears the blower pulley/belt, the blower will be hidden when the hood is on, Sneaky !!!
That's a "spare" hood I got from steves55 when I was over for CFAC'06.

The hood cleared my radiator, just as I thought it would after I "lowered" the radiator with those frame pockets.
More Hood Pix Here
And I welded in another front frame crossmember/support and whacked off the start of the flip front end.

Those tubes by the front tire are the front "legs" of the 12-pt cage, the radiator supports will be mounted on those.
More "Flip" Pix Here (Scroll down)

Lookin' good Willy.
Notice the covered engine trick. I've seen pro stock drivers do that to keep their secrets.
I watched the Bob Glidden crash (on TV) back in the 80s (I think it was).
Crazy, hit the wall and roll over crash.
Tears up the car pretty bad.
They show his wife and pit crew all watching in horror.
He's hurt, but not badly. He gets out and the first thing he does is throw his racing jacket over the engine.

OK, A question for you guys....
As it can rain here quite a bit (Ya wouldn't know it lately, but yes, it can!!! And I've seen 24 inches of rain in 24 hrs, it was like living under a waterfall!!!) I was thinking of setting the scoop on the carbs backwards facing the windshield.
As I recall with the "shoeboxes", there is a high pressure area right in front of the windshield, so it would actually enhance air flow I would think, and keep most of the rain out. If I can set the scoop up so it can easily and quickly be turned around (like, pull off to the side of the road when I see a heavy black cloud wetting the road ahead....) and turn it around???
I don't have a scoop yet, but here is one at Speedway Motors:

but I don't know how it is mounted or how easy it would be to turn it around along the side of the road....
But the price is right !!!
AND it is low profile, I want to keep visibility from the driver's seat as good as possible....
The cops around here are pretty tough, I don't want to give them any reason to give me a lot of grief, there will be reason enough once they see this machine....
Any ideas on "forward face" vs "rear face" on these setups???
Aloha,
Willy
PS, I spent today welding up the tilt bar for the front of the frame that I cut off yesterday, it is coming along nicely!!!
Pix later....

You wouldn't drive it in the rain would you??
I know, I know, you could get caught out in a downpour.
Make a rotatable pad that you could connect with a choke cable.
If it starts to rain, pull the knob and turn it around. You won't even have to get wet.

If it starts to rain, pull the knob and turn it around.
Heck, I could motorize it, just hit the switch and 'rrrrrrrrrr' it turns around !!!
I'll have to order one, am thinking maybe I could just drill two holes in the top of the scoop to line up with an air filter bolt on each carb with wing nuts on top, then it would be easy to do!

There's a Cliff's Classics sponsored; 56 Chevrolet 210 4 door sedan, bracket racing in the Portland/Woodburn area. Done up like a TAXI with yellow paint, stripes, and lettering; even has a TAXI light on top. Maybe an idea to draw on with the 4 door theme of things with your gasser. Butch/56sedandelivery.

Would love to see pix of that!
We pretty much settled on a "Hawaii surf cruzer" motif for this one. Surfboard on top (bolted in place!) and a "hula doll" waggin her hips on the rear package shelf! Even decided to call it the "Hip Shaker", which in Hawaiian is "Kikala Ho'oluli". Don't think I can get that on a license plate though! Maybe try for a plate that sez "HIP SKR" or "HIP SHK" or "HP SHKR", they only allow up to six letters in Hawaii.
Aloha,
Willy
