I was (finally) able to get out and do some testing in the good fall air this weekend.

Resulted in a new personal best: 9.85 @ 136.87 mph. Backed it up with a 9.88.

This could be attributed to the addition of Q16 race fuel, jetted up and re-set the timing. Baseline for the day was 10.07.

Way to go! BTW, how many times a month do you paint your car. Every time I see it, it is a differant color. JB

Thank you, but I'm not sure I know what you mean about the color;

It's been black since new, although it varies between "dirty black" and "needs to be wheeled out" black, up to "freshly waxed" black....

My monitor or video card is a little off. For some reason I keep thinking your car was dark blue. Oh well, I love black. If I did not have a green interior I would paint mine black. JB

I think the look varies depending on the sky and other things in the background...

that's probably why the magazines don't like black feature cars...

Say, Keith,

What kind of rear end do you have? What mods did you do?

Many thanks!

Thanks for askin; it's the original 8.5" 10 bolt that came under the car. On the exterior of the axle I've changed the attaching points a little bit to improve the rear suspension instant center, and the tubes are welded to the centersection. Inside, it's got Mark Williams axles (with C clip eliminators) and a MW spool.

Ratio has been anywhere from the original 3.42 all the way up to 4.88. Currently it's back to a 4.10.

Best ET is 10.01 @ 136 mph with Mickey Thompson 10.5 " slicks through 4" Flowmaster mufflers (1.400 60 ft time); Since 1990, I have been running select "Super Chevy" magazine events, select BTE/Citgo Series events as well as the full National Street Car Association Series. This car has been run at the following venues: Phoenix Firebird Raceway, Bakersfield CA, Norwalk OH, West Palm Beach FLA, Atlanta GA, Mobile AL, Joliet IL, St Louis, Cecil County MD, Petersburg VA, Martin Mi, Milan MI, Grand Bend Canada, Salem OH, Stanton Mi, Columbus OH, Memphis TN, Union Grove WI, Atco NJ, Bowling Green KY, Ubly Mi and Lapeer Mi.

Just updating the list; best ET remains at 9.85, but I can add Phoenix Speedworld, Indianapolis and Thompson Ohio to the list of tracks visited.

Remaining events for this year are planned to be:

July 12-14 in Joliet

August 2-4 in Bowling Green Kentucky

August 23 - 25 in Norwalk Ohio

and October 10-13 in Indy

all with the National Muscle Car Association.

This year marks 35 consecutive years racing this same car.

Looks like we are done for the year here in Michigan, so I thought I'd give an update for this season:

I spent a lot of time away on business (building G vans in Wentzville) - so I missed all of the NMCA events on my calendar - but I did manage to make it out twice this year.

I've been participating in an "all motor" series sponsored by the Renegade Race Association. They alternate events between Norwalk and Thompson Ohio. They have an 8.90, 9.90 and 10.50 index to chose from; since I'm legal only to 10 flat I have been slowing the car to 10.50 and running that class.

I'll tell you what - I don't know why we go anywhere other than Norwalk to race. That has got to be the nicest facility in the known universe. New guy here qualified #2 (out of 18 cars) right off the trailer

Of the 18 guys in the class I'm pretty good friends with one guy, one of my Pontiac buddies. Guess who I was scheduled to run in the first round?

Yep. He was a nervous wreck. We waited until 8:30 pm to run our first round...

and then....we got rained out.

Second race was in Thompson, which is a bit smaller facility. Qualifying was tough, with 10 guys all running within .001 of the perfect 10.50 run. First round my opponent broke at about the 1000 foot mark so I coasted past for an easy win. Second round....the rains came again and we were done.

I think I need to find an indoor sport (or, that said, I'm a huge proponent of indoor drag racing!).

So - that's probably it for now - unless I can sneak off and do some testing locally. Looking forward to not having to cut 4 acres of grass and using that extra time to get some work done in the garage...

Norwalk (aka summit motorsports park) & Thompson... You must live somewhere somewhat near me as those are my two closest tracks. Thompson is about 45 minutes away, and norwalk is a hour and a half away.

Detroit area. But I'm used to driving - I used to run the full NMCA/NSCA schedule (Florida in March, Georgia in April, Virginia in May, etc, ending up in Michigan and then finals in either Columbus or Memphis in September/October).

Norwalk's about 3 hours for me, and Thompson maybe 5 or 6.

Today is my car's birthday!

Built September 25th, 1973 in Oshawa Ontario Canada for US use.

Shipped Sept 26th and delivered through Robert Uptegraff Chevrolet in Davison, Michigan.

Mom drove it four years and then I got it when she was done. Had it ever since!

Keith
I was wondering how you got your car to set almost level with 2in drop spindles in the front ?
How did you get the rear down on those 29 in tires ?
I have a 76 EL camino im going to put 2 in drop spindles on but i would like to bring the backend down also i already have two coils clamped almost together to bring the rear end down it sets ok right now but i want it just a little lower like your car fenderwells just above the rims & tad bit higher mid tire in the rear almost what you have going on ! And i read somewhere you have a wagon spring in the R/R so i can not figure out how u got it to have the Great stance !
Any sugestions for my elcamino to get the back lower im runing OeM springs in the rear

I have production spindles in the front, but cut coils (probably one coil for a 2" drop).

I honestly don't remember doing anything to drop the rear. I do have a wagon spring in the right rear - plus an airbag which I preload with 20psi at the track (so the rear of the car is pretty jacked out of shape at the track).

The rear wheelhouse on a Chevelle may be different than an El Camino. I have no issues sticking a 29.5x15.5 Mickey Thompson (13.5" wide) in the wheelhouse. The frame was the limiting factor for me.

This came in my mailbox over the weekend.

Kind of an interesting diamond nestled within the coverage of the NMCA Indy event from last fall.
