well still no gas guage...I replaced the entire length of wire. With the sending unit out of the tank, and a new wire from the fuse box, key on, grounded, guage reads empty, un grounded guage reads full, and while grounded, moving the float by hand does not cause the guage to move at all. But with ohm meter connected, I get a reading of "0" with float lowered, and 30 ohms with the float in the raised position.

Does there need to be a fuse in the fuse block where the wire is connected?

no sir, that blade connector is only a conncection point that connects the sender wire to the gauge. consider this wiring diagram I put together around 2004:

Thanks very much, I may just have a bad, but new, sending unit.

Did you - by any chance - replace the gauge at one point? With one from another junkyard truck? Is it possible that a previous owner did?

A 66 truck gauge has a sending unit that is for 0-90 ohms - if you install a 0-30 ohm unit, the fuel gauge won't read anything but empty. IF your gauge is possibly from a 66, your sending unit wouldn't cause it to read anything but zero.

I am having an issue with my 66 C10 gas gauge. It reads E with key off. It reads E with key on. When I pull wire to tank from fuse box with key on, it pegs F.

Could I have an issue with wrong sending unit? Gas tank and sending unit were installed new a few years ago, and never worked. I am finally trying to get this working properly.

Thank you.

Tom

Tom, thanks for posting! If you haven't already solved your fuel level indication problem, let me give you my take on the trouble:

It sounds like the sending unit has a broken wire between the rheostat and the terminal on the sensor lid. This is a common fail on old sensors. the conductor is a flat piece of copper(?) that seems to crack and separate over time. I had the same issue and that is what I found to be the trouble.
