Hi, guys. I took a road trip to Ottawa, KS Fri. and brought back a 70 Monte Carlo SS. It's an L.A. built car that has lots of options and needs restored, but it has very little rust. It has a '71 454 that's been rebuilt and runs very strong. It's getting late, so I'll post more on it later.

Awesome! Looks pretty solid with most of the equipment there. Of course, now your son will want the SS.

Thanks! I tried out the posi last night. It works fine. The pavement showed both tires got power for about 80', until the car caught up with the tires! This car is gonna be fun!
I found the car on the FGMCC site. If you haven't been there, you should take a look.

Oh, I could get into some serious trouble there. I already have the garage full and want more cars. I told my wife if I can ever afford to, I want to get more property and have a 40 X 60 garage. It still probably won't be big enough.

Thank you. I'll have a hard time picking a color. I'm not sure I'll use the factory gold on the body, interior and top. I'm thinking about black interior and top with a dark blue body.

Nice car! Just for grins, have you considered the '63-'64 Corvette Saddle Tan paint, with the existing good looking tan interior? With a tan vinyl top, it would be awesome! Just one man's opinion....

Thanks. That's not a bad idea. I'll need to study some paint options. The first thing is to see what colors are available for the top. I was able to find an original air ride compressor and original brackets. It'll be here tomorrow.

I left out one option on my list: Rear window defogger.

I may be misremembering some of this, but when I was a kid, our next door neighbor in San Mateo, CA had a new'70(?) SS, silver with a black vinyl top, black interior MC. I think his had the SS wheels, and it may have had black hood & trunk stripes as well. My memory is his even had a blacked out grill. The car had a lot of 'eyeball'.

On your gold one, I don't see any outwards signs of it being an SS. My apologies for the characterization, but were there 'plain' SS MC's and those that got the same SS treatment (badging, stripes, wheels) as the 70-ish Malibu SS's?

I take back the SS wheels in my prior post. I looked at a few photos, and it was the ralleye wheels he had on his.

The Monte SS was a very low key car. It only had SS454 on the moldings above the rocker trim. Very small, almost unoticeable. And it has SS on the rear body panel on the right hand side near the tail light. That was it for exterior badging. If your neighbor had the things you mention on the car, they were done after the factory built it. I have seen a lot of Montes with the SS emblems put on the fenders high behind the front wheels like the Chevelle had and even with SS on the grille and in the center of the rear body panel like a Chevelle. That is incorrect for the Monte. As are the SS stripes.

Now with enough money, you could have the dealer do a lot of things to a car. You could even get the factory to do some odd stuff. There was a Nova built around 1970 that had Plymouth Plumb Crazy paint applied at GM per the customers order.

Hmmm... I'm not going to say I can remember the Chevelle style SS badging on it, but I do remember the hood & trunk stripes, so those must have been added like you suggested. To say that he babied that thing would be an understatement. He was fanatical about it's care. I let a tennis ball get too close to his car once and I knew never to get too close to it again after that. Wonder where that car ended up at...

It may very well have been a real SS with the subtle badging and he added the SS stripes because he liked them. I just mentioned the wrong badging because when people make a fake SS Monte, they automatically assume the badging was like that of a Chevelle from that era.

Nothing wrong with personalizing your car. I don't like the stripes on them myself, so I just won't put them on my Monte when it gets painted again.

This link shows how to differentiate a real 70 or 71 Monte SS from a non SS car.
As far as emblems and diferences that could be seen without getting under the car or opening the hood, the 71 had the SS emblem above the rear bumper and black paint on the panel between the bumper and trunk lid along with extra trim at the top of this panel. It also had a horizontal rubber strip on the rear bumper, and the front lower fender trim emblems that read SS454. 70s only had the front lower fender trim emblems.

Someone in my neighborhood has parked a '70 MC (not an SS) on the street near my house. I can't help but notice it everyday. It's in pretty good shape. The body doesn't appear to have any rippling, and there is one little crease in front of a rear wheel. It is silver with a black vinyl top, and black interior. Other than needing the front seat recovered, fresh carpet, and an inside arm rest/door pull or two, she is a mighty fine lookin' car. I keep day dreaming about it with a set of Magnum 500's on it (instead of the big flat factory caps) and sitting in my driveway.

I wonder how much it would take to buy her...?

The good news (for buying one) is the Montes aren't as popular as the Chevelles. So they can be had for a fraction of the cost of a Chevelle.

Update:

I've spent some time on the SS454. I've replaced all 4 springs and the lower control arm bushings. I took the vinyl off and cut a couple of small rusty spots out at the top of the rear glass and welded in new metal. I've decided to use the factory colors on everything and I repainted the rear window channel with Rust Bullet and the correct color paint for the metal that's inside, at the bottom of the rear glass. I installed a new rear glass, repaired and primered the fenders and hood, as well as the top and the trunk lid. Resealed the drip rails and replaced the bulbs that were burned out and bled the brake system. Put the 8" Rallys that were on the Nomad on it and installed new bumpers. I've repaired the level ride compressor and installed new Delco air shocks. I made an inlet filter for the level ride compressor and bought a NOS one. Sure hope I never need to buy another!

I decided to license and drive it a little before I take it off the frame, hopefully this winter. I want to know exactly what I need to repair and replace while it's apart. The trans was weak. It slipped sometimes when shifting into 2nd. I drove it to town 3 or 4 times and the trans gave out. I bought a book on rebuilding TH400s and tore into it. It was only apart a week. The VIN on the trans matches the car. The forward clutch pack friction plates had no friction material left. I installed a shift improver kit, too. Works great! I've been having fun with it. It runs very strong and burnouts and making lots of noise comes easy, but I haven't done very much of that. Don't want to tear it up before I paint it.

I just modified the exhaust to exit in front of the rear tires for now. It had no tailpipes and it had to pass a state inspection to get plates on it. The car's ugly at this stage, but it's already fun.

There's more pics in my sig.

Starting to shape up nicely. You definitely aren't afraid to dive right into stuff. I admire that in a person. I have yet to dig into an auto trans. I have a TH350 sitting in the garage I am eventually going to rebuild. It doesn't really need it, but I want to learn the process. I'm probably not even going to use it, just sell it when I'm done. Good luck with the Monte and have some fun with it.

Thanks! I come from a do it yourself family.

When you tackle the trans, just get a good book for less than $30 and ask a few questions on your favorite web forums. You'll do fine.
