I was looking to install a 700R4 transmission in my 66 longbed truck, do I have to shorten the drive shaft? If so by how much? Any help would be apprecated.

Almost certainly you will have to shorten the drive shaft but depending on what you had in there originally you may also have to have a custom shaft built. In my opinion if you are going to the expence of swapping a 700r4 a custom shaft is not that big of a leap.

Besides all that you will have to modify and/or move the crossmember and find the correct mount for it. Then the Throttle Valve cable installation is very important. Post again with information like: what original trans you have, engine, etc.

If you don't get a custom drive shaft made the front shaft will be around 18" long.

If you have a long tail shaft 350 you won't have to shorten your drive shaft. Long tail is 6" If I remember right.

Check out Van Pershing's web site. He (and I) used a crossmember from an 80's truck. It's an easy installation for less money. I'm happy with the 700R4.

When I put my 700R4 in I used the drive shaft from the donor vehicle - an '83 Suburban. It's a one-piece unit. I had to shorten it a couple of inches. It's probably best to wait until you have the tranny installed before deciding how much to shorten your drive shaft. There's also the matter of matching the u-joint yoke. Here's some helpful tips .
