Here in Victoria county, it cost me $61 or so for five years. I have my car registered as an antique, using my YOM plates. Here we do not have any windshield stickers though, the sticker has to be displayed on the rear plate.

You need to read the laws concerning Antique and Classic cars. There's a marked difference in yearly cost (not antique), BUT you are LEGALLY restricted in how and when you can drive the car. Classic is much more lenient as to when and where you can drive the car. Don't get caught with antique registration, driving when you shouldn't, by a knowledgable/PO'd cop.

Time to put up or shut up with these.

You won't be able to do this anymore with "Classic" registration. You have until September 1st of this year to get clean readable matching plates and get classic tags (requires inspection, no restriction on driving). You can still do antique registration. Law text as originally written (effective through 9-1-11)

Sec. 504.501. CLASSIC MOTOR VEHICLES. (a) The department shall issue specialty license plates for a motor vehicle that is at least 25 years old. The license plates must include the words "Classic Auto," "Classic Motorcycle," or "Classic Truck" or a similar designation, as appropriate.

(b) A person eligible for the license plates may instead use license plates that were issued by this state in the same year as the model year of the vehicle and are approved by the department. The department may require the attachment of a registration insignia to the license plate in a manner that does not affect the display of information originally on the license plate.

(c) The fee for issuance or approval of license plates under this section is $15.

Added by Acts 2003, 78th Leg., ch. 1320, Sec. 6, eff. Sept. 1, 2003.

Amended by:

Acts 2009, 81st Leg., R.S., Ch. 1136, Sec. 32, eff. September 1, 2011.

The amended text will become effective 9-1-11 and anyone who hasn't done the YOM registration will not be able to do so:

Text of section effective on September 01, 2011

Sec. 504.501. CLASSIC MOTOR VEHICLES AND TRAVEL TRAILERS. (a) The department shall issue specialty license plates for a motor vehicle that is at least 25 years old. The license plates must include the word "Classic" or a similar designation, as appropriate.
(b) A person eligible for the license plates may instead use license plates that were issued by this state in the same year as the model year of the vehicle and are approved by the department if the plates are approved for the vehicle before January 1, 2011. The department may require the attachment of a registration insignia to the license plate in a manner that does not affect the display of information originally on the license plate.
(c) There is no fee for issuance or approval of license plates under this section.

Added by Acts 2003, 78th Leg., ch. 1320, Sec. 6, eff. Sept. 1, 2003.
Amended by:
Acts 2009, 81st Leg., R.S., Ch. 1136, Sec. 32, eff. September 1, 2011.

I'm looking for '75-'76 plates starting with N or P myself. NHE245 is on eBay but I also found a set that says AMY107 and my wife's name is Amy so I do believe I'm going to go with that even though they don't QUITE match my Torino (built in 7/76 originally sold 11/76 could be N or P-reg)

Just to say so, I went in on AUGUST 31 and got my '76 plates on my Gran Torino, classic registration, not antique, they even let me put the '76 sticker on it! I didn't find the N or P one I wanted, but I found something WAY better:

My wife's name is Amy. She technically bought the car, was her eBay account after all. Was her PayPal account. Was her clicking the bid button laying in a hospital bed a couple hours before giving birth to our youngest daughter.

Now that's dedication. So you bet your hiney I'm putting her name on my car. Permanently and all!

Hi Folks,

We were able to register my old 51 Styleline as a Classic using YOM Texas Plates today (10 January 2012.) There was not any fuss or problems dealing with the tax clerk. Only addition to the usual fees/taxes was a $15 fee to register the plates.

What was the deadline of 1 September 2011 in relation to vintage license plates?

Cheers!

I have two cars registered in Texas with YOM plates. I do not have inspection stickers on them, (didn't think I needed them). How can I tell which I have, antique or classic? If I have antique, can it be changed to classic? Frankly, I did not kow there were two catagories when I put YOM plates on them. Thanks.

I hope I'm doing this right...

One thing I'd like to mention is that after March 2013 you will not be able to register year specific plates for a newly registered antique vehicle in Texas; existing antique vehicles with Texas year specific plates will be grandfathered.

After March 2013 all newly registered antique vehicles will be issued those goofy looking antique vehicle plates issued by the State. They have a cartoonish looking Ford Model T on them which has no place on any of my Chevy's.

Additionally, the small registration decal for the back plate; I was told by a peace officer at a local car show to put it on the backside of the rear plate as there is nowhere in the plate policy that states it must be mounted on or above the plate. It works great on my 1965 Impala SS as the rear plate is hinged to access the gas cap.

On my other classics I have to unscrew the rear plate to show the decal however I find antique vehicles are almost never pulled over around my parts. God Bless Texas!

The newest wrinkle is that they are issuing a year sticker to put on your plate. Guess too many people were driving on expired antique plates.

And the information in the previous text appears to be incorrect. You can still use YOM plates for classic and antique registrations.

I registered the '57 yesterday with YOM plates. No problem. They are giving you the choice of putting the regular sticker on the windshield, or putting the date sticker on the plate with a medallion. I chose the window sticker.
