What's more common for a leak, the head gasket or valve covers? I've got quite an oil leak coming from somewhere on the top of the engine (can't quite see yet, it's tight in there)and it's running down on the exhaust crossover pipe. I would think that if the head gasket leaked it'd be pretty serious.

Bet on valve covers. It is a weakness in the older small blocks. You would notice a head gasket in how the engine runs.

That's good, it's easy enough to replace them. It sure is making a mess on the garage floor, I never knew they could leak so much even with the engine off. I haven't started this car in a few months now and the puddle grows!

The head gasket seals compression and coolant, not oil. Oil is supplied to the upper engine thru the pushrods. Another possibility would be the intake manifold end seals or maybe the oil pressure sender/switch The best thing to do is clean all old residue and then find exactly where your leak is.
Good Luck, Don
