We just finished a conversion from a 6 speed to a 4L60E on my sons F-body (2002). The tranny is brand new, not a rebuild, as is the TC. We filled the TC prior to install and added fluid to the tranny before starting the engine. Fluid level dropped a bit and the tranny started to knock, similar to a rod knock, we continued adding fluid until the proper level was obtained. Knocking noise went away for a while. Now it is back, especially if tranny is in reverse. Car drives O.K. ( in the driveway only) no slipping or harsh shifts. Fluid level is good, no air bubbles either. Other than going back in to check TC to flexplate bolts ( new flexplate and bolts) what else can cause this knocking sound?

Check the TC bolts and locktite. Do you have knocking while in N or P? If not and only under movement then check for other rattles like the exhaust hitting something.

Just removed and replaced the TC bolts. The flexplate is a TCI dual pattern. The bolt holes are designed for 7/16 bolts, a 1/2 inch bolt will actually fit. The F-body uses 10mm bolts, quite a bit smaller. Spoke with TCI and they said everything is fine. Spoke to the tranny builder an he suggested that I remove/clean the bolts, install loosely and turn the engine by hand so the bolts torque up against the flexplate, removes the slop. Did this and tightened up bolts, with Loctite, ran engine for 10 minutes, no noise. Have to work on a SES light and I will take it for a ride this afternoon. If all is well, then it was the bolts. Will update post later.

Drove the car for about 20 minutes and it never knocked. However, it has developed a high pitch whine ( similar to a power steering pump whine) and the tranny builder strongly recommemded returning the tranny. He suspects that we damaged a bearing or the pump rotor when we tried to install it without the TC fully seated. I have to agree with him on this. So its back on the lift, pull tranny and ship it back for repair. Guess I have a garage ormnament for a couple of weeks.

Cant believe that I never closed this post. The whine was the engine installer routed the emission hoses incorrectly. Everything was attached to vacuum and no fresh air inlet. Corrected the hoses and no more strange noises. Needless to say, after we corrected all the issues, he went back to a 6 speed.
