First of all we are new to 1956 Nomad. went lock the rear gate tonight and the key went in the push button up and down with key tumbler sets faceing down on the key. Turn key quarter turn to right. key would come out. pushed button and no lock. put key back in at quarter turn to right and turned to up and down. key came out. no lock. put key back in and turned to right quarter turn to right. heard thumk key came back out. push button did lock.

now put key back in and turn up and down and does no lock or quarter turn to right and button does not unlock..

kind of stuck..

could some one tell how operation is supose to work..

If you can get the upholstery off of the inside of the gate and take off the access door you can unhook the rods that go from the handle to the latch and pull them to unlatch the gate. That will make it a bit easier to get the handle out. You will probably have to remove the entire center bar to get the handle off of the gate.

You may want to try some penetrating oil in the lock itself and to the inside of the handle mechanism if you can get access.

See if you can tell if there are any missing or broken parts. The lock should move something on the inside of the handle mechanism that makes it so the push button engages the mechanism when unlocked and misses when locked..

I am not particularly familiar with the mechanism since I haven’t taken apart the one in my Nomad. But that is generally how a lock works on a vehicle.
