I finally fired up my '56 chevy truck, 235 ci engine last week. I had it bored .040, built it back with twin progressive 2 barrel carbs from Langdon's Stovebolt, and cast iron headers. I put a T5 transmission from a 1992 chevy S10. I put it in each gear last week just to see if all gears would engage, and move the truck. Had a little trouble with 5th and reverse, but finally got it to shift into each. Well, after getting a few minor issues with my new wiring harness resolved, and engine tuned, timing set, I thought I'd take a trip around the neighborhood before I sent it to the exhaust shop. I could not get it to go into 1st, 3rd, or 5th gears. It would go into 2nd, 4th, and reverse. Any ideas what I need to look at? The shifter is in right, or It wouldn't have worked the first time. Kinda stumped here....

Disconnect the linkage at the trans. With the clutch depressed see if you can shift it manually at the trans. 3rd and 5th are engaged with shifter moved forward, if I remember correctly, check for any interference.

There is no external linlage on this transmission. The shifter goes down into the top of the transmission. I am going to pull the shifter to inspect, but really no much to see. I've had this tranny for about a year, sittin in the garage until I was ready to put the motor and trans back in..

Ok, toploader, you can manually shift the synchro/slider, use as screw driver or a small pry bar, clutch disengaged.

Found my shifting issue. There is a nylon bushing that goes into the hole in the shifter shaft, that the top load shifter seats into, that was out, and wedged behind the shaft, not letting me get those gears. Can't believe I missed that when I put the shifter in. Shifting fine now. Thanks for the replies!
