I apologize for asking a Pontiac question on this Nomad forum but I am coming up empty in looking elsewhere. I just bought a 1958 Star Chief Custom Safari wagon--sort of the poor mans Nomad. It came with no motor or transmission and I think I want to put a late 70s 350/350 combo in it that I have had in the shop for some time. I am wondering if you know of anyone who has done this as the mounts on the Pontiac seem to be a lot different than the Chevy and the steering box looks like an issue. If you know of a Pontiac forum where this would be better addressed, I would appreciate that info. Thanks.

Hi Dan,
I am no expert but I would think
'58 "Nomad" wagons would be the same as your "Safari".
Somebody down at the 1958-1960 Chevys Forum
must have already done it.

Thanks for the reply Bob. I think the Safari chassis is different than the Nomads as Pontiac used their own chassis and driveline in 58? I have seen references to it both ways so am not sure. Part of the fun is solving the puzzle so the search goes on.

Good to hear about your car. I hope you are made to feel welcome here, if the car frames are the same or not. I would love to see some photos of it. Good luck in finding the information you are looking for. I do remember seeing an earlier Pontiac post in another site about tri5 models. I will send you a PM. Maybe they can offer some help too.

TriFive Pontiacs made in Canada were built on Chevy frames, likely the '58 models made in Canada were also built on '58 Chevy underpinnings.

Jalapeno is absolutely correct. US Pontiacs have almost no mechanical parts in common with Chevrolets. Canadian Pontiacs are mechanically Chevrolets with Pontiac-looking sheetmetal, trim and dash clusters. Pontiac-looking because the Canadian cars have a Chevy wheelbase, so a fair number of US Pontiac body parts won't fit.
