Just got my ‘58 Impala back from the shop. Had the carb rebuilt, new fuel pump, cleaned fuel tank and fuel lines. I let the car warm up for a few minutes, but then it tends to stall when I put it in reverse to get out of the garage. I’ll start it up again, and it might stall when I get to the closest stop sign. Once I pull over and start it again and let it warm up more it is better, but still feels like it might stall if I don’t give it some gas at stops. Eventually it runs fine and I have no issues. Do I need to let it warm up longer when I start it, or do I need to go back to the shop and have them adjust things?

Kinda sounds like the idle speed is too low and possibly the mixture screws set on the lean side. If the choke is not fully closed at initial cold start then it can act like that also. If you don't know how to adjust the carb yourself then best take it back to them and have them start it when cold to adjust things. It is very simple to do once you know how.

I agree. Sounds like the automatic choke is out of adjustment.

As others have said; auto choke is a likely candidate.

Check the initial timing both with, and without, vacuum advance before futzing with the carb.

If it's a 'points' ignition, check/set dwell first, then timing, then carb.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will call the mechanic Monday and make plans to take it in.
