On my 327 with 168 tooth flywheel, I installed a Jeg's Hitachi style mini starter. It worked fine with no shims for a couple months. Then I heard a slight shring when I hit the key so I retorqued the bolts, took ever so slight a turn. Now, a couple months later it makes a god awful noise and doesn't seem to spin the motor. At this point I haven't done anything other than check torque on the bolts and they didn't take any.
Any thoughts, guesses, insights greatly appreciated.

I would immediately pull the starter check block mounting boss for cracks,
verify the starter clocking bolts are not cracked,
and go through the pinion depth alignment business,
surly the pinion is not slipping on the armature shaft?
the flywheel, GM bolts, starter brace and all those other things

Thanks for the suggestions. The starter body looks good. The teeth look to have some wear. I have to jack up the car to look at the flywheel teeth. I was able to get the starter off with the frontend tilted up.
I seem to remember something about different angles on the teeth of starter motors for different year flywheels. I'm going to have to research that. Thing is I don't know if this starter is for a newer flywheel. It's still perplexing that it worked just fine and then went to crap.

i will assume your using starter bolts. if you dont have a rear brace you might need one. the ring gear teeth could be worn. is your battery strong? are your battery cables big enough? is your ground direct to the block?

Been out of town most of last week so went under the car today. I used the bolts that came with the starter. Good battery trunk mounted, heavy duty cables, starter grounded to the frame. The ring gear teeth look okay. A brace is a good suggestion, hadn’t thought of that. Assume that has to be fabbed?
I have a diagram to measure tolerances. I think I’ll reinstall and put a shim in and see if I can take some measurements.

did you look at every tooth on the ring gear?

I did, there is one area that has some damage on the end of one tooth and the next four after it. Those four aren’t too bad. I’m comfortable with current condition. I’m taking some time before reassemble to clean and paint that side of the block and to wet sand and polish the aluminum oil pan. I will report back with the outcome after the reinstall. Thanks everyone for your input; most helpful and much appreciated.
