Hello!

I have an untested 1957 Chevy 235 (passenger car, not truck version) that I am going to run in my 41 Chev. I flushed the block with water, but when I went to pull the block's rear drain plug, nothing came out. Figured some crud was in the way, I stuck a long wire in, fished it around freely (no obstructions) but I get thick black grease on the wire. No water, not one drop. No rust or scale, and the block is full to the top with water.

Did they change the block design by 1957 that the plug is no longer a water jacket plug but now part of the oil gallery? I noted it is immediately above (cast into the side of) the oil gallery that runs front to back on the left side.

On older 216's, this was a drain cock here. Online reference photos say its still a drain, just a plug instead of a spigot. Mine's giving me nothing but pure black grease. Suggestions?

Well, here's an update...

I used compressed air to pressurize the area to see what would happen. After a while, I could hear water in the water neck (rad hose is not on) start to bubble. So its definitely a water drain plug, not oil. But although air would go up, water would not come down...not a drop will come out. So, it seems the water jacket is clogged solid. Great! Looks like I'll be pulling the head at a minimum to dig out around the cylinders...

The lower part of the water jacket is filled with rust. It will eventually find its way to the radiator core. :evil :
