Hi,
I bought a new fuel tank for my 56 Chevy Hardtop coupe and I don't know what color it should be painted.
The old fuel tank is painted with a red oxide primer and the straps are black.
Does anybody know what are the right colors for the tank and straps?
Thank you

I will say. They are not painted,
The 5 or so I have removed from 5-6 Chevys over the years were just a surface rust of what looked like galvanized steel on the bottom.
But I did notice a difference in the amount of a black tar type coating varied on each of them, some not so heavy and some that covered the sides of the tanks.
I am not aware of "concourse" type rules for 5-6-7 chevies but if it was me I would paint the tank with a galvanized looking paint?
Paint the top of the tank with a spray tar type material and over lap 3 of the sides but not the fill tube side.
But like I said I'm not a concourse fanatic, mines powered coated black with stainless straps.

I have a '57 that I bought from the original owner in 1982. The car is still very original today in many aspects. Gas tank has never been out of the car as far as I know. I cleaned it and detailed it 37 years ago, and it was raw (natural) metal on the tank itself, and the straps were black.

He who dies with the most toys doesn't necessarily win, but had more fun getting to the finish line.

I took a look under the car again. I removed and cleaned the straps. I'm pretty sure that they are black.
Thank you for your message.
