Short story - will collapsing 2 tubes on each side to about 1/2 diameter for equal distances in order to clear pitman arm and idler arm body cause problems?
Long story - when fitting the engine originally with aftermarket motor mounts the block sat at a fantastic angle so we lowered the nose into the cradle about 2". When it came time to hook up the exhaust the available clearance was almost non existent at the pitman arm (to the left) and idler arm (at the swivel area.) I dented two of the tubes on each side a little, wrapped the idler arm with DEI and drove the car for about 10k miles. The idler arm was fitted with a poor man's power steering bearing kit.
Recently did some refurbishing by switching old parts for new on the front end. While in this state I wanted to open up the clearances because of a slight heat problem on the idler bearing and because left hand turning was limited. Called a friend who made it all much better, however at the cost of reducing the tube diameter (equally!) on both size and for equal distances. The tubes were 1.25 or 1 5.8" tubes. Now they are about half that. It looks lousy for sure but like I said the clearance is much better.
Would Anyone know if there is there going to be a problem with anything in the short or long term?
I will get them recoated with Jet Hot silver and i now actually have room to wrap them with some DEI Titanium wrap if desired.
Thanks.

David Frieberger and Mike Finnigan of Road Kill fame, did a "study" of this (it may still be on YouTube.Com). They crushed and beat in multiple primary tubes on various headers to come up with very little, if any effect, on performance. Tried to look it up on YouTube.Com and could't find it. Go to "Dailymotion.Com/video/x3vupo", or do a Google search for "Exhaust header bash! Testing power loss from dents..."

Saw the same road kill episode Butch is talking about,
Dented tubes made very little to no noticeable difference at all.
( dented tubes, dented tubes, not mashed in half tubes )
One more time for those people, dented tubes not mashed in half.

Hey bad56, it was not a TV episode of Road Kill,
It's a video on YouTube.

Denting one tube a little bit to clear a p/s box is not the same thing as crushing 4 tubes to clear the pitman and idler arms.
There are many headers that clear the pitman arm and idler arm just fine, suggest you look into those.

I hear what your saying, and yes toe-nailing a BB header isn't the same, but try not to sully the water, I have a couple tubes on each side that are about 1/2 diameter now - they are all on strait runs of pipe.
What fits a stock location probably won't fit a motor that's lowered 2". I say probably because a set of LT1 BBK headers fit (mostly) on the right side but the steering box on the right kills the deal.
It's a problem to which any number of ideas may help solve. This one would be ok too but it looks bad, but wrap will cover it.
I've seen many stock Ford Factory headers that are almost flat, and more than once on the same tube so I figure this is workable without any harm.
Still your right hopefully, in that there are probably many that will fit, maybe even better. The problem is finding one for this application.
Thanks.
Stan
PS what the guys at Hot Rod call bashed is nothing but a little dented, but then hot rod reporting wants you to try your hand and can be filled with vagaries to that point, no?
