I’m looking to purchase a new trunk lid for my 57 that’s under restoration. I see that there are multiple manufacturers/quality/pri ces.
I’m looking for opinions on the best manufacture for price, quality and fit. Goodmark, Sherman, Golden Star, Real Deal Steel just to name a few of them.
I would like opinions from those who have installed them, not the retailers. What do you guys think?

Oh, and yes, I have been supporting our sponsors, lol

OP Stated, I would like opinions from those who have installed them
but I'm interested too, I have not ordered yet.

I looked around, seems the places you mentioned are all I found that make reproduction trunk lids.
Prices vary a little, looks like there are 2 different quality trunk lids.
The higher priced trunk lid looked like the better trunk lid and is claimed to be US made.
I assume the higher priced trunk lid has the lock stiffener welded in already although I did not find that in the info from each vendor.
Real Deal, has no details and it is $550
Bob's Classic, $510, no details
Good Mark, I could not find the item
Sherman, has the higher quality/price at $850
Golden State, you have to be a member to see prices
Danchuk, they list it but it says not available
Ecklers, has both quality at $869.99 and $486
Most carry the two different quality trunk lids and they are priced about the same.
Ecklers says it ships from the vendor, Sherman
I did not look at shipping costs.
Shipping could be the issue.
One place is about $280 shipping.

Hello;
Back when I was fixing my 57 (still am) I was lucky enough to get a deal on a trunk lid from Real Deal Steel. Although the unit I goy had some minor damage from shipping it fit really nice, accepted my mechanisms and seems to be just fine (minus the rust my old one had)

Bad56, glad to see I’m not the only one, lol. I thought it was interesting that the more research that I did about the actual “manufacturers” of the lids, the cloudier the info got. The GoodMark trunk lid is on RockAuto for $500 plus shipping. I didn’t see if they are the actual manufacture or just a “vendor” that stamps their own name on it and distributes them.

Your right, shipping is a huge cost to factor in. Spring Carlisle swap meet is coming up soon. Was thinking of buying from vendor up there. I could save on tax and shipping then. Doing my research now and getting ready.

I too found that the “USA” made lids are more $$$$. I don’t mind that as long as I actually get what I paid for. Not cool to pay double the price, and then find out that the quality/fit is horrible.

Bruce, that’s good to know that Real Deal Steel lid fit good. I believe their lid comes with the electro coating, which is helpful while doing a long restoration. Thanks for reply!

Update:
I called Goodmark Inc to see if they actually manufactured their lids. I had a great conversation with them about this issue.
I was told that there are only TWO manufacturers of replacement tri-five trunk lids. (Along with other sheet metal)
As we have already discussed, there is a cheaper foreign lid and the more expensive USA lid.
Well, that’s it, two manufacturers and multiple “vendors” that distribute and sell these trunk lids.
The foreign lids are EDP coated to avoid rust while being shipped across the big pond. The USA lids are manufactured by CARS Inc and have a phosphate treatment over the bare metal to prevent rusting.
As far as quality and fit, Goodmark says that they haven’t had any complaints or issues with either of the manufacturers. He said they sell mostly the foreign made lid. I thanked him for the honesty and input.

Anybody have different facts, feel free to input!

So here’s the million dollar question,
Foreign made trunk lid- quality/fit/cost,
Or USA made trunk lid- quality/fit/cost?

You nailed it, there are only two manufacturers for most of these parts, especially the big items.

One manufacturer is EMI in Michigan. They recently got out of the business but their tooling and manufacturing has been purchased by CARS, Inc.

The other manufacturer is Golden Star. The parts are made in Taiwan.

It is NOT a foregone conclusion that the US parts are better (or more expensive for that matter). Many of the Golden Star parts are the best on the market, and they also have parts that are not made anywhere else.

I'm not up a whole lot on the trunk lids, but I would wonder if the cheaper stuff was just a skin that you install on an original inner structure.

Gentleman, thanks for all of the replies. As everyone can see, just making the decision to purchase one part for our cars can be a daunting task! Whew

In my first post, I asked for opinions about fit/quality/price of the trunk lids that are currently on the market. Well, after doing the research and getting those opinions from guys who have actually installed the new lids, I’ve decided to buy the USA made trunk lid from C.A.R.S..
I will have to pick it up at the Spring Carlisle Show, but will get the “show price” which will save me a little more $$$.

I’m not trying to stir up the argument about USA vs Foriegn made, and I’m NOT saying that the foreign lids are bad! Im just saying, from the percentage of folks that I talked to, the C.A.R.S. trunk lid has the quality and fit that I’m looking for. The price is definitely higher than the foreign lids, but the opinions of quality and fit outweigh that for me. As the saying goes, “opinions are like butts, everyone has one”, right?

Bad56Sedan, could you follow up on how you like/dislike your new trunk lid once you get it installed? I will do the same along with some pictures of the install/quality/fit of the my new lid. Hopefully, we can help the next guy with their purchase decision.

Thanks again!

I have an update on my trunk lid purchase :

I was supposed to go to Spring Carlisle Swap Meet to get my CARS Inc trunk lid. Well, the dealer called and informed me that they would only have the “smoothie” style lid up at Carlisle. He said they wouldn’t have the USA made stock 57 lids till later this summer. I thought about that style lid, but it wouldn’t be correct for the theme of my build.

Then, three days before Carlisle, I found a local guy that had an original 57 trunk lid, and I quote, - “has been sitting up in the barn loft since the 80’s”! No brainer, purchase done!

I can’t believe my luck. The lid is in great shape and best of all, it’s original GM. I was able to purchase other much needed parts for my car while getting the lid too. Had a good day!
Shout out to Eddie Z! Thanks!
