I got a 51 chevy sedan delivery in trade, and it's missing the vin on the a pillar, and it has no title either. Is there a place on the frame for a hidden vin, so i can get a title and vin made for it? Some have said there is a place on the front of he frame, is this true? I need to remove the front walkaway to find it , which is no problem if that s where i can find it.

Most states used the engine number on the title for registration. The tag on the driver side A pillar was a body serial number from Fisher Body and some have gone to using that. I know of no numbers stamped on the frame except for convertibles and maybe hardtops. I could be mistaken but there has been some discussion about that on this forum. Do you have a bill of sale? You may have to have the car inspected and get a bonded title depending on state dmv policy. I'm in Minnesota and have a bonded title on my 50 sedan delivery although it's way past the 3 year limit since it was issued. It's basically absolving the state from any liability for issuing a title to someone and someone else produces the original title. Good luck.

I had no vin plate, but had a bill of sale, from P.O. Download Title Application from Vermont. Send them a Bill of Sale w/Body Number off Firewall, Description of Vehicle. They will look in Blue Book to determine Value, and do Title Search. You send them the Tax, they send you registration, and license plate, because they do not title vehicle over 25 years old, Take registration to your DMV and get Title.

Got VIN plate from E Bay-Bulgaria-had to send them a picture of Title before they would print numbers on plate, paid another vendor, 4 bucks for two drive rivets to put on door frame.

FWIW, the serial number on these is not body style specific. If a guy had, say, a 4dr and a hardtop and the tags "fell off" both of them, and he mixed them up putting them back, and had no title or paperwork that showed body style on it, nobody would know. As noted no hidden stamps or anything to ever tell anyone different.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, criticize it on the internet.

Now I don't know for absolute sure, but in CA the highway patrol always knows where the id numbers are in case of a stolen vehicle. For example I made a trailer from a 61 Chevy pick up rear frame and they showed me where the numbers were on the frame right behind the cab. 50s might be different.
