Hi everyone, I have a problem here, and I am stumped. I recently installed a rebuilt 66-67 Nova rear into my '55 chevy station wagon. My tires were rubbing when I would load the car up for a trip, and air shocks didn't help.
I was told that these year rears were 2 inches narrower, so thats what I put in. Our first trip out we went about 90 miles running normal speed when we heard a weird noise. pulled over thinking we had a flat, but everything looked ok, so we were going to go down the road to a wider pullover, but the noise got really bad, so we pulled over again, this time we found two lug nuts on the ground, and the rest of the wheel studs sheared off. Long story short got them replaced and continued on, checking them frequently, but had no other problems.
two weeks later I took the car to another show about two hours away from home. No problems, and before I headed out for home, I went over all the lugs and they were all tight. I got about ten miles from home, and all of a sudden, I got the same loud noise from the rear, and tried to stop, but I had no brakes. I proceeded to bounce off the guard rail, then the center median twice before it stopped, facing across two lanes, lucky I didn't get hit by any traffic from behind, but my car took hard hits front and back, and when I walked around the car, the rear brake drum from the opposite side was laying on the road, tire gone, and NO wheel studs on the axel!
I am stumped as to what is causing this. Nor can any of my buddies have any answer for me.
Can/ or does anyone have an answer for me?
meanwhile my wagon is somewhat close to totaled, depending on what the ins. co says about it. Any answer would be appreciated! Thanks, Don.
