I thought it was more of a ductile (nodular) iron as well...similar to the knuckles and/or inner C's. Which are fairly weldable w/pre/post heat and the right rod.
But then if they were all ductile/nodular the 9" Ford "N" dropout center section would be no different form the non "N" dropouts....LOL
