Not that hard really. I haven't done a Impala steering column but I did the one in my 67 Ramp truck from a tilt auto column to a 4 speed in the floor. I cut the gear selector knob off grounded smooth and filled with Plumbers putty. Let it dry good for a couple of days and sand it smooth and paint. I then took the old NSS switch off and used the 2 screw holes to lock it in place with longer screws. I cut the gear selector arm off at the bottom. Painted it and installed it. Works great and you would never know it wasn't factory.
