If the casting number of the head is 3836848, and the date code is E 27 3, then as I understand it the head was cast in 1963 and is a replacement head--that's good news.

My guess is that someone has replaced the engine at some point in it's life. The B53 848 350 number doesn't look like an engine casting number to me. If you could pull the starter and look on the block for the date code cast there, it would help.
