The 427 was a BB (similar to the 396).

GM bored and stroked the sbc to 400 cu in in the late '60s/early 70s (? I don't recall exact dates). The '400' had 4.12" bore w/3.75" stroke. There are variations in 383, but 4.03" bore and 3.80" stroke is a common one. The crank from the '400' is the 'basis' for the 383 (which GM did not make for production). Oversimplifying, the 383 is a 400 with a 4" bore (like the 350 and 327).

Because it is EASY to achieve/better the torque and HP of the GM 427 BB, in a 383 sbc, that would be my recommendation (especially if the car was originally a sbc).

How? Buy one already built to meet your 'needs'.
