I have a 68 long box. I had the same problems you are having with where to locate the filler hole. My solution was to install on the drivers side just inside the bed behind the box corner post. I bought a flip out door and filler neck assembly from a wrecker. It came off an old Datsun pickup. That gave me my face plate. I then built a small box around it. You don't lose any cargo area and you have a smooth box side panel. The stainless steel tank I mounted between the frame rails has an elbow on that side of the tank.

Hmmm, that’s not a bad idea. I have made the inner panel already and have the S-10 filler door. The issue I have is for some stupid reason GM trimmed the area that holds the marker light so I can’t mount the door without welding a plate to the area. I just don’t want to damage the paint. I’m going to mock up a test section and try some JB weld to see if it would be strong enough to put up with the constant pressure from using.
