I had a similar problem with my 700-R4 chewing up speedometer gears after it was rebuilt. I'm running a 70 Nova 10 bolt. The answer I came up with is an electrical speedometer...no gears to muck around with. It may be a bit more expensive but the speedometer can be calibrated yourself regardless of what rear end ratio you have.
