I am real close to closing the deal on a '65 corsair.

I have read that cyl head temp should run normally between 400 and 500 degrees. What would cause the temp to go beyond this range? The first thing that comes to mind would be timing. What else would cause this?

Thanks in advance, Pete

If I recall, along with the belt driven fan those flat 6's had lower air ducts below the heads/exh manifolds with thermostatic flapper doors at the rear. The flappers were operated with bi-metal coils or springs similar to an old choke coil and opened or closed to let air pass, thereby aiding in warm up and cooling. Be good to know they're operational (assuming they're still in place) as well as muffler shields between mufflers & valve covers
