Hello I have a wrecked 2006 GMC 2500 4x4 that had a 6.0 and want to use suspension and drivetrain as far as trans, transfer case and differentials over to my 1500 chevy 4x4 with 5.3 and I know your gonna say just swap frames but what's easiest and less work I'm getting a new 5.3 with 460hp and don't want to use the running gear I have now won't handle it and actually I just want to change front and rear differentials and transfer (case cause it matches differential) and figure the suspension on 1500 wont match up to 2500 front and rear end

Howdy and welcome!

Sounds like you’re not afraid of a little work. Yes you can, but there are some things that may not be a direct bolt on swap.

The frames themselves are also different. The 2500 frame is much stronger than the 1500. You can see that in the cross members from the transfer case back.

I’m reasonably certain someone here has done what you’re wanting to do.

The engine and transmission/xfer case will bolt right in. The steering bolts right in as well.

Agreed. If you want the 3/4 ton running gear, you'll have to have a 3/4 ton frame. I don't believe any of the running gear will interchange from a 1500 to a 2500. It may not be too hard to fabricate brackets to make the rear differential fit, but I don't think there's a way to get the front differential to fit.
I used parts from a 2004 GMC 1500 to repair a 2007 GMC 2500 HD about 12 years ago. I used all sheet metal other than the cab from the 1500 for the repair. Both were extended cab short beds, and all sheet metal was the same. The main difference I can remember is that the 2500 had a grill with a black spacer to fill the area between the grill and bumper to account for the taller frame. The grill was actually different, even though at first glance it looked like the spacer was a different part. The bumpers were the same.
