Hi Gang, starting to hear a noise in the rear end or axle. Can't tell which, rear end or axle bearing. Anyone have a way of telling while driving? I am on the road so can't put it on a hoist for several days. Was hoping to find out which so I can be prepared to fix when I get home as I am leaving agin in 6 days. Hope everyone is doing fine and once again thanks for the help.

If you make a slightly left and right turns when going straight ahead on the highway, if the noise goes away briefly, then it is an axle bearing. If it doesn't effect the noise, then it is in the differential. Most likely an axle bearing. I had a bad axle bearing on my Ford, and it was difficult to determine which one it was, so the dealer replaced both under warranty. 25,000 miles later, it is starting to make noise again.

typicaly if noise changes with pressing gas pedal or releasing it then i would suspect a wheel bearing.
