It was announced yesterday Jeff is leaving the booth to become Vice Chairman at Hendrick Motorsports. He has had an owner's stake in HMS since the formation of the 48 team.

It will be interesting to see who's up next for his broadcast job.

Bring back Darrell and Mikey! (not)

That is a good move for both Jeff and for Rick Hendrick. (succession planning and all)

ENOUGH of the Waltrips!
You have to wonder how much longer Joy will call the races too.

Good point on Mike Joy. I'd say he's very close to retirement age.

The media seems to be playing up Jamie McMurray and Kurt Busch as Gordon replacements. Harvick would be in that mix too except that most think he'll race a while longer.

Hopefully Mike Joy will stay one more season, while they filter in a couple of recently retired drivers to fill Jeff's seat.

In my opinion:
Mike Joy is solid in the booth. I hope we don't lose him for another few years.
Jeff Gordon was becoming solid in the booth.
Clint Bowyer is a loose cannon, but entertaining to listen to. He's probably going to be OK in the future in the booth.

I'd do Harvick in the booth for a year, the minute he retires from driving. He's got driver's wisdom and good perspective.
Kurt Busch has calmed down (personality wise) in the last few years, and he interviews calmly now post-race. He might be good.
Ryan Newman maybe. Pretty calm guy personality wise. But dull to listen to.
Jaime McWorry? Oh hell no. I've watched him alot on the post race show and he and Larry Mac just don't float my boat.

Change is in the wind.

I agree with what you said for the most part.

Mike Joy is solid, I'm ok with him calling the races as long as he wants to and is capable. I don't see a true heir apparent. The guy that calls the Xfinity races on Fox (forget his name) is not anywhere near what Joy is. Alan Bestwick is better than he is, with experience from defunct networks.

As you say, Bowyer is a loose cannon - that's what they hired him to be.

I think they did good limiting Larry McReynolds to the studio and giving him a few studio tools to work with.

The bunch at NBC frankly is a bit better, at least the ones in the booth. It will be interesting to see if they keep them all through the end of their TV contract. There's too many of them if they are going to be on a "going out of business" budget, which is how they look to me.
