Got up this morning and saw that I had left trunk lid open. Light was still bright and on entering car chimes and light seemed good. Turned key heard click and saw gauge drop below 5 volts and nothing. Let off the key lights and chime worked. Turn the key nothing.

Tried jumping the car to no avail. Took battery out to have tested. Guy says it shows good 99 percent. Asked if the tester put battery under load and was told yes.

Started home to pull starter to have tested. Called a friend on the way home, told him what was going on.

He tells me to never try and crank one with low voltage, tells me to smack the starter a couple of times before pulling it and then try to start it. Lo and behold started right up.

Glad most of my friends are smarter than me. Seems the bendix had stuck. This appeared as a short to me. Just glad the old girl is still ticking.

Just FYI if it happened once it may happen again.
Glad you got it going though

Should have re-posted, you were right. Several days later did it again not so much low voltage as 26 year old starter. Replaced works fine now.

Good. Better to find out now than to get stranded with it. Been there before
