I have searched the site a lot but have not found a detail list of the best way to change the rear axle bearings in a 55 chevy car. Any suggestions?

I have a similar question for our 57. Is the modern bearing replacement (Timken RW307R) sufficient? Or do I need to get the wheel seal kit (SKF 19011) which appears to have old style seals that would pair with the old style bearning.

Is there a separate seal for the "bearing retainer?"

You don't need an extra seal. The outside of the bearing has a seal and the o-ring should come withe the bearing.
The retainer has a gasket but is not sealed to the axle. If the bearing should leak, the retainer has a indention to allow grease to go through a hole in the backing plate and not get on the brake shoes.

I did order a pair of 1957 Chevrolet Axle o-rings which I thought would go between the retainer and the backing plate.

I removed the axles today and discovered there's only the paper flange gasket and the bearing, which has the o-ring incorporated into it.

I don't know why but I had the same problem until a member gave me some specifics. I then followed his instructions and added my personal procedures. I took pictures with the idea I would share them online with fellow Tri-Five guys. I tried to add the info and pictures about four months ago and I tried many times without any luck. Let me say this; removal of the bearing from the shaft requires a non-existent removal plate. Since I have removed axle bearings before with a Dremel tool I went to work and did the same to my 55's shafts last fall. This procedure takes a little more time but the whole job takes less than a day. Basically, remove the axle from the rear end, clean the assembly, remove the tension ring on the shaft, cut the outer bearing in half with the Dremel tool and then cut the inner sleeve as well. Be careful not to damage the shaft. I had to tie my retainer plate out of the way while I did the cutting. That is all you have to do. Now replace the bearing as per the manual. Hint; once the new bearing is on the shaft use a lead hammer to hammer the bearing and shaft back into the housing. Once the bearing stops moving HIT IT NO MORE! Sometime in the future I'll try to load the procedure again. Good Luck.

Harbor Freight and Northern Tool have Bearing Separator and Puller Sets that have “Bearing Separators” (or clam shells) that fit between the axle bearing and the bearing retainer so the bearing can be pressed off the axle as described in the Shop Manual.

Yes Harbor Freight does have a tool. But the clearance between the flange and the shaft is insufficient to use a modern day bearing removal tool. Somewhere on this site there is a picture of the original removal plate. It is not available, but you could have it made by a high end tool maker. Chevi

I made my own tool to wrap around the bearing and then I used my press to take the bearing off and put it back on very easy
email me so I can show you the bearing remover.
